Critical Role's Laura Bailey has wielded tons of iconic items across her characters... but she doesn't plan those ahead of time
How did The Mighty Nein's Jester Lavorre actually wind up with that giant lollipop weapon? Let Laura Bailey herself explain her philosophy

If you've ever seriously cosplayed a Critical Role character, chances are you've paid a great amount of attention to the items you carry. That goes double if you're playing a character brought to life by OG Critical Role Laura Bailey, who wields some of the most iconic weapons and items in all Exandria. The thing is, though, those items don't come into the story the way you might expect - as Bailey herself recently explained.
The Legend of Vox Machina voice actor was recently joined by fellow OG Rolers Sam Riegel, Taliesin Jaffe, Travis Willingham, Matt Mercer, Ashley Johnson, Marisha Ray, and Liam O'Brien at LVL UP EXPO 2026, where she was asked about her current Campaign 4 character, pixie assassin Thimble.
"Does Thimble have a specific item or aesthetic quirk," asked costar and panel moderator Marisha Ray, "That helped you click into her personality during the design phase?"
"The thing is," Bailey answered, "All those other items though for my other characters, they show up as we're playing. They found their way to those items that then became like an iconic thing. So like Jester, it wasn't until Beau said that I only eat sweets that I was like, 'All right, that's her thing.' Um, so with Thimble, I don't think I've found [anything]. "
"Plus," Bailey continued, "She can't carry anything, you guys. It's kind of hard to have an item that is iconic."
One thing that does stand out, however, as Bailey will admit, is the button that Thimble wears on her hip.
"She's got a little button," concluded The Mighty Nein voice actor, "But it's not just a button. She can use it as a shield. She can use it as a plate. She could use it as a hat. It can be a Frisbee. It could be anything you want. I didn't ask for that, that was the artist that added that on and I was like, 'I love that. Yes.'"
Critical Role Campaign 4 is streaming now on the group's Beacon, YouTube, and Twitch channels.
With two animated series on Prime Video, Campaign 4 in full swing, and so much more Exandrian lore to come, Critical Role is showing no signs of slowing down. That's why the adventuring party at Popverse are here to bring you everything we can from those nerdy-ass voice actors & Bo., including:
