Lobo made his cinematic debut this year in Craig Gillespie’s Supergirl. Jason Momoa portrayed the morally corrupt bounty hunter, bringing the character to the big screen for the first time. However, if things had turned out differently, Lobo would’ve made his cinematic debut in the 2010s, and he would’ve been played by an entirely different actor. After the release of the 2010 film The Losers, Akiva Goldsman had his eyes on doing a Lobo movie with Jeffrey Dean Morgan.

“Akiva Goldsman, the producer who did Losers, had the rights to Lobo,” Jeffrey Dean Morgan told Josh Horowitz during an episode of Happy Sad Confused. “That was real talk. I wanted to do it. I had never heard of Lobo. I dove right in and I was like, oh yeah. It suited my humor and sarcasm, and all that. It didn’t suit my body. But I was like, ‘I’ve got time. I’ve got a year to get big.’ It just never came to be.”

It turns out that Morgan had a lot of time, because the movie never got off the ground. Guy Ritchie was set to direct the film, but he left the project when Warner Bros. fast-tracked his Sherlock Holmes sequel. Morgan also believes Warner Bros. was souring on DC films after the commercial failures of Losers and Watchmen.

“There was a script floating around that needed work. Warner Bros. coming off of Watchmen and Losers wasn’t having a great time with DC – and maybe Jeffrey Dean at the same time now that I think about it.”

Morgan would get another shot at the DC Universe when he was cast as Thomas Wayne in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. This was a role that required far less bulking up. Still, it’s amusing to think about the fact that Lobo was almost Batman’s father.
