Charlie Cox has been playing Daredevil for a long time now. More than a decade, in fact. However, the character still hasn’t become second nature to him, and he still has to put a lot of effort into certain aspects of Daredevil. One thing Cox still hasn’t settled on is his American accent, which still slips up when he says certain things.

During an interview with Empire Magazine, Charlie Cox talked about not being able to be complacent with his Daredevil performance, even after he’d been in the role for several years and in multiple Netflix series. “Some of the technical stuff, it’s not got harder, but it just hasn’t got easier,” Cox admitted. “The blind acting is always a challenge. Maybe it’s because I overthink it a little bit and I worry about it not working, but that’s never got easier.”

The thing that Cox has never fully gotten the hang of is Daredevil’s accent. The actor was born in London and has to put on an American accent whenever he plays Daredevil. “I still have to do a lot of voice lessons for my accent, and work with a voice coach. I would have imagined that 12 years later, that would just be second nature, almost like my own voice. But it’s not.” He specifically cites one phrase that he simply couldn’t say with an American accent and had to be called in to rerecord his lines. He says he “had to ADR every single one [of his pronunciations of ‘caramel corn’] because I got them wrong… I had to go back and do all of them. That was a traumatic experience, the caramel corn.”

So that’ll be a fun game to play the next time Charlie Cox is at a convention, such as London MCM next month. Ask him to say “caramel corn” and see how he reacts. Just don’t tell him we suggested it.
