The outrageous success of the Vox Machina Kickstarter taught Critical Role the "power" of their community
In just an hour's time, the Legend of Vox Machina Kickstarter from Critical Role raised over a million dollars

Critical Role's Legend of Vox Machina Animated Special is one of the most memorable Kickstarter success stories of the past decade. In 2019, when the Kickstarter crowdfunding campaign began, it amassed more than a million dollars within its first hour. The Kickstarter would go on to raise more than $4.3 million, providing the funding for the first 10 episodes of the Legend of Vox Machina's first season on Prime Video.
And what message did this send to the minds behind Critical Role? Popverse's Trent Cannon had the chance to sit down with the group ahead of the release of Legend of Vox Machina season 4 to find out the truth. Travis Willingham filled us in on the details.
"It definitely taught us how much power our audience and our community has. It's a very sobering and humbling thing to go around to all the traditional studios and say like, 'Hey, we feel like we've got a great story, there's a good audience that's attached with it, we've got stuff that we think would be good,' and to hear like, 'Sounds great, love the pitch, just not right for us,'" said Travis Willingham. "And to do a Kickstarter and to have the audience show up in the ways that it did and sort of put everyone on notice for what was really here behind this thing that I think a lot of traditional media spaces didn't really understand. That was just a really nice sort of coming-out party, I think, for Critical Role and for the people that love and support it."
Since the Legend of Vox Machina launched on Prime Video in 2022, Critical Role's fanbase has only expanded further. With the fourth season of the show adding Andy Serkis (yes, THEE Gollum) to the cast, it's safe to say that Hollywood has recognized Critical Role as the cultural juggernaut that it is.
The Legend of Vox Machina season 4 will hit Prime Video on June 3, 2026.
With two animated series on Prime Video, Campaign 4 in full swing, and so much more Exandrian lore to come, Critical Role is showing no signs of slowing down. That's why the adventuring party at Popverse are here to bring you everything we can from those nerdy-ass voice actors & Bo., including:
