Folks, there is a new trailer out for Thunderbolts*, which has sent our collective brains into overdrive as we pour over every single frame trying to solve some of the few mysteries the MCU has to offer. One of the big mysteries is who bought Avengers Tower. The iconic landmark was up for sale during Spider-Man: Homecoming, but we still haven’t found out who had that kind of cash on hand. Now, we may have finally had our answer – or have we?
Shortly after the Thunderbolts* trailer dropped, speculation went into overdrive that it was Julia Louis-Dreyfus’ Contessa Valentina who signed the lease on Avengers Tower. The good people at Screenrant were incredibly confident that the interior shots we see at around the 2:50 mark of the trailer are set in what became of Avengers Tower, but we have our doubts.
It isn’t that there isn’t a possibility that what we see is a redesigned Avengers Tower, but, aside from the fact that both buildings have giant windows and a bar, we don’t see it. As far as we know, Tony Stark didn’t have a monopoly on floor-to-ceiling windows in a skyscraper, and these definitely aren’t the same design we’ve seen in 2012’s Avengers. Plus, there is no Empire State Building looming n the background, which feels like the most obvious clue Marvel could give that we’ve finally seen the eventual fate of Avengers Tower. A lot changes in the MCU, but the New York skyline is pretty consistent.
The easist comparison we have is Loki’s “I have an army” speech at Avengers Tower in 2012 and the penthouse shot we see in the Thunderbolts* trailer. If that is meant to be Avengers Tower that the new team is meeting up in, it has either had a massive redesign when the Countessa moved in or the shape of the penthouse was changed somehow over the years.
Maybe this is a total misdirect by Marvel to make the reveal that the Countessa DID buy Avengers Tower that much more shocking. Anything is possible in the several months we have between now and when Thunderbolts* releases in May 2025. We’re just saying that the building we see in this trailer isn’t the Avengers Tower we know.
