The Mandalorian and Grogu is a hit - and Lucasfilm is already thinking about the follow-up

Han Solo once said, "Never tell me the odds," and against all odds, The Mandalorian and Grogu film didn't crash and burn at the box office in its opening weekend. And with Disney celebrating its $163 worldwide box office gross accumulated over four days, it isn't surprising that Lucasfilm boss Dave Filoni is already considering potential follow-ups to the Jon Favreau film.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, director Jon Favreau revealed that the Mandalorian and Grogu present a "wide open canvas" for future projects. According to Favreau, Filoni has been "thinking deeply and about the larger story, about how all the characters [like Ahsoka and Thrawn] all fit together, and understanding the timeframe and how it leads into the next era of Star Wars."

That's a particularly telling phrase at the end there: the "next era of Star Wars." It's worth remembering that Filoni was announced by Lucasfilm as working on a future Star Wars movie that would connected the Mandalorian, Ahsoka and the related New Republic-era plot threads into one epic story, with the writer/director hinting that it might even related to the rise of the First Order. Of course, that announcement came in 2023, years before Filoni became one of the two executives in charge of Lucasfilm as a whole. Who knows how much of that plan is still in place today?

For what it's worth, Jon Favreau had already written a fourth season of The Mandalorian that was scrapped in favor of making The Mandalorian and Grogu as a theatrical feature film. Reportedly, the fourth season of the show would have fed into Ahsoka season 2. Clearly, after the events of the film, there are still plenty of pieces left on the chessboard for Filoni to move around, with Ahsoka season 2 due to hit Disney+ in early 2027.

So, could we ever see Favreau's fourth season of The Mandalorian? Who knows. Only time will tell.

Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu is in theaters now.
