Spider-Man: Brand New Day's box office success proves it’s Tom Holland’s world, we just live in it

Between his latest outing as the MCU's Spider-Man and The Odyssey, Tom Holland is the bero... er, *hero* of the summer

Bad news for anyone betting against Spider-Man: Brand New Day. The latest chapter of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and fourth official big-screen outing for the MCU's Spider-Man is a web-slinging success at the box office, beating out Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey for biggest film in its opening weekend. And while there's more than one commonality between the two films, we have to look at the movies' shared lead actor and wonder - is this the summer of Tom Holland?

Let's back up - according to Deadline, Brand New Day has officially become not just the biggest domestic opening of this year, but the biggest domestic film opening of all time, earning a staggering $360M in its first weekend in theaters. Previously, this record was held by Marvel's own Avengers: Endgame, which scored a (still very impressive) $357.1M at the box office when it dropped in 2019. Combine that with the $70M Nolan's Odyssey earned the same weekend (the third since its release), and you get what Variety has called the biggest box office weekend in movie history, with Holland's face forever chiseled into this milestone.

Now look, I have no way of knowing exactly what goes on in the Marvel Studios writers' rooms (except, of course, coffee provided by Robert Downey Jr.'s Latverian brewers), but I know that on the Popverse Slack channel, we were all wondering about if this will affect Spider-Man's future in both Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars. The people want their Peter Parker, is what we're seeing, and if Marvel's was planning on adding any late-stage cameos, we wouldn't be surprised if it was Mr. Holland.

I mean, it's not like there were any other actors that featured in both Brand New Day and The Odyssey, right?

Oh, right.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day and The Odyssey, both starring Tom Holland, Zendaya, and Jon Bernthal, are in theaters now.

Marvel's most reliable superhero has proven he can do a whole lot more than just 'whatever a spider can.' Swing into Spidey's history with Popverse's...

Just watch out for that radioactive blood.

Grant DeArmitt

Grant DeArmitt: Grant DeArmitt (he/him) likes horror, comics, and the unholy union of the two. In the past, and despite their better judgment, he has written for Nightmare on Film Street and Newsarama. He lives in Brooklyn with his partner, Kingsley, and corgi, Legs.
