Sometimes seen as one of the lesser members of Marvel’s Fantastic Four, The Invisible Woman — AKA Sue Storm, or Sue Richards after she married Mr. Fantastic — is getting her time in the spotlight when she returns to the big screen this summer. In fact, the MCU Invisible Woman might be the most forward-thinking cinematic version of the character to date, despite the movie’s 1960s period setting.

“If you played an exact '60s Sue today, everyone would think she was a bit of a doormat," Vanessa Kirby told Entertainment Weekly about her character. "So figuring out how to capture the essence of what she represented to each generation, where the gender politics were different, and embody that today, was one of the greatest joys of this."

Director Matt Shakman says that Sue — who’ll be the head of the Future Foundation in the movie, a group that has helped lead efforts of global demilitarization and bringing about world peace — is intended to be in every way Reed Richards’ equal in her new cinematic incarnation.

"If he is the most scientifically intelligent person, then she is the most emotionally intelligent person on the planet," Shakman teases. "Between the two of them, they're building an idealistic society."

The Fantastic Four: First Steps will be in theaters July 25.
