Much has been made about the fact that Avengers: Doomsday went into production without a finished script. That is very much the antithesis of what James Gunn and DC Studios have mandated, but that hasn’t stopped the Russo Brothers from bringing actors into the latest MCU crossover film without anyone knowing exactly where the story is going. According to the directors, the Avengers: Doomsday script was a “living organism” that allowed the actors to bring something unexpected to their characters.

“We always view the script as a living organism,” explained Joe Russo in a recent interview. “We’re improvisation-based, rehearsal-based directors. We like to see what the actors bring to the characters, and sometimes you don’t get the actors until a few days or weeks before you shoot them. And a lot of the time, that’s when the magic happens.”

That’s a pretty big gamble, even for the directors of the last two Avengers films, which remain two of the highest-grossing films of all time. Clearly, they have a process, which includes giving actors the freedom to improvise their lines while on set, and it has worked for them in the past. However, things are slightly different with Avengers: Doomsday. Marvel Studios is clearly hoping to recapture the magic of the MCU’s heyday and is spending an impressive amount of money to do it. Maybe they’d like to know what those expensive actors they are bringing back for this film are actually going to say on the screen.

Avengers: Doomsday, finished script and all, will be in cinemas on December 18, 2026.
