After dropping a handful of short teasers setting up the return of heroes like the X-Men, Thor, and the Steve Rogers formerly known as Captain America, along with team-ups between the Fantastic Four, the Wakandans, and the Talokans, a full trailer for Avengers: Doomsday has finally been unveiled by Marvel Studios. The problem is that only attendees of CinemaCon 2026 have seen it.
What we can extract from IGN's report of the trailer is that the Fantastic Four meet with the Avengers at Avengers Tower (both the official Avengers team and the New Avengers, formerly known as the Thunderbolts, seemingly). Shuri's Black Panther is there in addition to Namor, and the X-Men's Cyclops enters the room.
The IGN article also noted a fight between Shang-Chi and Gambit in the X-Mansion, Mystique transforming into Yelena Belova before fighting her, and Kathryn Newton's Cassie Lang appearing alongside Paul Rudd's Ant-Man.
Not surprisingly, Thor rushes at Doctor Doom with his battle-axe, Stormbreaker, which the villain "blocks." That's when Steve Rogers "appears and summons Mjolnir from Thor's hand. He's looking long-haired and scraggly, even more so than in Infinity War." Good to know that I'm not the only one who came out of the COVID-19 pandemic looking a bit scraggly.
It's worth noting that Variety reported that Doctor Doom "catches Thor’s magical hammer Mjolnir with his bare hands," which contradicts IGN's article. As Popverse's resident Thor reader, I'll wager that it was Stormbreaker, not Mjolnir, that Doom supposedly "catches," because Stormbreaker isn't bound by the same magic that makes Mjolnir unable to be picked up by the unworthy. Remember, in the MCU, Hela caught Mjolnir, but that was because she wielded the hammer before Thor was even born (not to mention, she was a daughter of Odin). Stopping or blocking Stormbreaker's trajectory isn't that impressive in a universe with powerful beings running amok, and it wouldn't make much sense for Doctor Doom, a megalomaniac human, to be able to "catch" Mjolnir.
That's not all; according to The Hollywood Reporter, Thor is seen in the trailer intoning, “Put aside your petty squabbles. Presume nothing except this: If you return, you will return as brothers and sisters. Mark my words: We are going to need a miracle.” And then... Chris Evans returns as Captain America, prompting Thor to say "it's not possible." It clearly is - but how and why? That remains a mystery for now.
With any luck, we'll be able to see for ourselves what the truth is sooner rather than later. Avengers: Doomsday will be released December 18, and we can only hope the trailer gets a wider release soon.
