Steve Rogers, perhaps more than anyone, deserved a break at the end of Avengers: Endgame. The guy had saved the universe and been reminded – repeatedly – that he was a man out of time. So, he took a little time for himself. Married his girl. Had a kid. Now, he’s back to save the world in Avengers: Doomsday. And, in case there were any doubts, the new trailer confirms that he is still worthy.
The biggest reveal in the new Avengers: Doomsday trailer might be our first chance to hear Robert Downey Jr. as Doctor Doom, but Marvel Studios has snuck one last big moment into the trailer by showing Chris Evans as Steve Rogers once again. In this new trailer, we see Chris Hemsworth’s Thor approaching someone off-screen. This mystery figure says, “Hey pal.”
“It’s not possible,” replies Thor, just before he extends Mjolnir. A moment later, the hammer flies to Steve Rogers' waiting hand. This both serves as a mirror to the moment in Avengers: Endgame when Captain America proved he was worthy to wield Mjolnir in the first place and as confirmation that it really is Steve Rogers rather than a clone or duplicate or even Mystique in disguise.
More importantly, it shows that the time away from the action and giving up the mantle of Captain America didn’t make Steve Rogers less worthy. The man just needed a vacation to come back at full fighting strength.
