Victor Von Doom might be in the business of destroying the Avengers, but it sure does look like he'll do wonders for movie theaters. A recent report puts Avengers: Doomsday at absolute staggering box office opening, putting it in line to become not just the next Marvel Cinematic Universe triumph, but potentially to break the record for biggest film opening in the history of cinema.
The report in question comes from World of Reel, who themselves take their predictions from Box Office Theory. According to the outlets, the numbers for Avengers: Doomsday are looking to equal $100M in presale, should the sales continue moving as they have been since fans were given the opportunity to buy early tickets. If this trend maintains its course, they say, Doomsday is looking at a potential $1B global opening weekend.
If so, the cinematic debut of one of Marvel Comics' greatest villains wouldn't just be a record-breaker, but would be the third titanic success for Marvel Studios in just two years. You might recall that the studio's first R-Rated picture, Deadpool & Wolverine, became the highest-grossing film with that rating of all time. Then, just this past month, Spider-Man: Brand New Day opened to a whopping $932M globally in its opening weekend.
Obviously, we have to keep in mind that in searching the future for answers, not even the great Victor Von Doom can be certain of what he finds. Still, even if the next big MCU tentpole film doesn't quite hit those numbers, those people that used to predict the slow decline of in-person movie theaters sure seem to have been way, way off.
Avengers: Doomsday comes to theaters December 18.
