In 2021, Image Comics declared it was no longer working with writer Warren Ellis due to very serious sexual misconduct allegations made against him. In a public statement, the publisher said it would only reconsider it if the writer made "amends to the satisfaction of all involved." Now, five years later, it's working with Ellis on new material. It's unclear if Ellis has made amends to the extent Image Comics has said they would require, or if something else changed behind the scenes.

Popverse asked Image Comics what had changed, and the publisher declined to comment. 

In 2020, more than 60 individuals came forward alleging sexual misconduct by Ellis dating back to the early 2000s. Ellis did release a public statement in which he acknowledged that he "hurt people deeply" and expressed contrition, but talks with a group of some of the victims who had organized under the name 'So Many Of Us' ultimately led to an impasse in late 2022 over a mediated accountability process, according to a group statement released in January 2023.

Following the first allegations being made public in 2020, DC Comics pulled a planned Warren Ellis story in the Dark Nights: Death Metal event, but completed the serialization of Ellis' The Batman's Grave series with Bryan Hitch. Collections of that, and other previous work have been published by DC, Marvel Comics, and Image.

In 2021, word came that Image Comics was in talks with Ellis and artist Ben Templesmith to restart their series Fell. While initially confirming those plans, two days later the company backtracked, saying that the plans were "premature" and that it had in the two days, decided to publicly break ties with the writer until "he has made amends to the satisfaction of those involved," with the publisher encouraging people to read the allegations against him, adding, "Please visit SoManyOfUs.com."

Five years since those aborted Fell plans, and six years since the very troubling allegations emerged, something has apparently changed to lead to Image to get back in business with Ellis for new comics, beginning with a November 2026 OGN illustrated by Lordess Foudre. This project would be the most significant new comics work from Ellis since the allegations were made; however, the writer has talked over the past few years about other new comics work being in progress with unspecified publishers.
