Rob Liefeld's Youngblood is living up to the name and homaging a landmark X-Men moment with its upcoming Giant-Size Youngblood #1. The 72-page one-shot, timed to release hours before Comic-Con International: San Diego begins, is now known to feature the debut of five new Liefeld creations that will become the "core" of a revamp of the team, along with the return of another Liefeld superhero team.

"Giant-Size Youngblood #1 is chock full of signature moments that shape the future of the franchise!" Liefeld says in a press release. Among them is the formal return of Liefeld's New Men team who were teased in the recent Youngblood #100, but also a group of 5 new Liefeld creations that are set to become the core of the Youngblood team going forward.
July's Giant-Size Youngblood #1 will feature not only new Youngblood characters primed to be key parts of the team and series going forward, but also features artists making their debut in the Liefeld family of titles that he's dubbed industry 'Young Bloods.'
"Part of the pure joy I have experienced in my career is putting fresh, new talents under the spotlight and the 'Young Bloods,' as I call them, came out in full force with these incredible covers!," Liefeld says in a press release.
Giant-Size Youngblood includes variant covers by Ken Marion, Beniamino Bradi, Michael Pedro, and Reese Hannigan... along with a main cover by (who else?) Rob Liefeld, who broke into comics at the age of 19 with a primordial version of Youngblood as a pin-up, years before its formal debut as an Image Comics flagship launch title.
Giant-Size Youngblood is in many ways a not-so-subtle homage to the landmark Giant-Size X-Men #1 by Len Wein and Dave Cockrum, which rejuvenated Marvel's X-Men franchise. Liefeld is a long-time fan of Cockrum's work in particular, and has a close relationship with the late creator's family. And like in Giant-Size X-Men where the heroes visit a mysterious island, so do the Youngblood team in Giant-Size Youngblood.
The 72-page Giant-Size Youngblood #1 goes on sale on July 22, just as Comic-Con International: San Diego begins — which Liefeld will be attending.
The Avengers' best-selling comic ever isn't by who you think (it's Rob Liefeld).
