The Rookie Season 9: Release date, cast, and what's next after the kidnapping cliffhanger

Will Tim and Lucy survive their kidnapping at the end of season 8, and who's really behind it anyway?

The Season 8 finale of The Rookie starring Nathan Fillion aired on May 4th, 2026 and left fans immediately wondering when the show would return to wrap up its dramatic cliffhanger. Thankfully, ABC has already confirmed The Rookie Season 9 is forthcoming, and will debut in early 2027 as part of the network's midseason lineup.

The Rookie stars Fillion as John Nolan, originally the oldest rookie in the LAPD. While he previously worked in construction, a series of life-changing events inspire Nolan to relocate to SoCal and pursue a career in law enforcement. Eventually, Nolan becomes a training officer. The show also stars Melissa O'Neil as Lucy Chen, Alyssa Diaz as Angela Lopez, Eric Winter as Timothy "Tim" Bradford, Richard T. Jones as Wade Grey, Mekia Cox as Nyla Harper, Shawn Ashmore as Wesley Evers, Jenna Dewan as Bailey Nune, Lisseth Chavez as Celina Juarez and Deric Augustine as Miles Penn. The full cast is expected to return for the next season.

In the finale to Season 8, Tim and Lucy (Melissa O'Neil) had just gotten engaged when both were kidnapped by mercenaries working for big bad Heath Everett (Jeffrey Vincent Parise)... but showrunner Alexi Hawley has teased that there's someone else behind the scenes who's really responsible. "I think there's a right hand person out there that is pulling the strings for sure," he told Deadline. "I don’t know if it’s all season but we’re definitely gonna [focusing on where Tim and Lucy are, and what happens next], figure out where they are, and figure out how to get them back, and whatever obstacles we can put in their way on that."

As has been the case for the past few seasons, The Rookie will debut midseason on ABC. (The Rookie Season 5 was the last time the show has run throughout the traditional broadcast year.) While the network has yet to announce an official premiere date, based on past experience, fans should expect The Rookie Season 9 to begin in January 2027.
