The Pitt season 3 release date: January 2027 window, cast, plot and what we know so far
Season 2 just ended, but that's all the more reason to start asking the important questions regarding The Pitt season 3's release date on HBO Max now

When is The Pitt season 3 coming out? It's the question on just about everyone's minds since The Pitt season 2's finale aired April 16. No official release date for the next chapter of HBO Max's hit medical drama has been announced by the streaming platform, but that doesn't mean we don't have a good idea when the next season might arrive. Without further ado - here's everything we know about The Pitt season 3's release date.
When will The Pitt season 3 be available to stream on HBO Max?

The Pitt is expected to return for its third season January 2027, based on statements from the core creative team, although no official announcement has been made by HBO Max.
Sure, as of April 2026, HBO Max has not officially announced a release date for The Pitt season 3. However, the creative leads behind the TV series and its streaming home have gotten pretty specific when they talk about The Pitt season 3, saying on multiple occasions that it will be available to stream January 2027. Take executive producer John Wells, for example, who recently said to Deadline, "The writers’ room opened up last week, and they’re at the end of their second week, [...] We will be back in production in June, and plan to be back on the air again the same week in January with 15 episodes next year."
For clarification - Wells made these comments mid-March, and when he says that The Pitt season 3 will air "the same week in January," he's comparing the third season to The Pitt season 2, which aired January 8 of 2026. For the record, The Pitt season 1 debuted January 9, 2025. Based on this, we're feeling pretty confident that The Pitt season 3 will debut January 7, 2027... but that's purely informed speculation on our part.
The Pitt season 3: What we know about the story

The writers' room for The Pitt season 3 is less than two months underway, as Wells indicated in the quote above, so this is likely a question that The Pitt season 3 writers themselves can't even answer fully yet. The Pitt executive producer, star, and occasional writer Noah Wyle basically inferred as much in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter published April 19, when he said that showrunner R. Scott Gemmill and the writers room are still mapping out the storylines.
The Pitt season 3: What actors are returning?

This is another question that we can't answer with absolute certainty because neither HBO Max or The Pitt season 3 creatives have come out with an official statement. What we can confirm about season 3 cast, though, is that its cast will lack at least one previous series regular. As reported by Variety, actor Supriya Ganesh, who has been portraying Dr. Samira Mohan since season 1, will not return for The Pitt season 3; however, the same report stated that Ayesha Harris, who played night shift resident Dr. Parker Ellis in season 2 and commented about how complicated the night shift can be, will be shifting to days and will be a regular in season 3.
Per statements from producers, the remainder of the existing cast are believed to be returning for season 3. Yes, even Noah Wyle's Dr. Robby, whose status seemed a little uncertain at the end of season 2.
Will The Pitt season 3 have another time jump after last season?

We're going to end on this question for now - predominantly because, for once in this list, this is a question that we can answer with some amount of certainty. Speaking to TVLine, showrunner Gemmill confirmed that The Pitt season 3 will be set in November of the same year as season 2, roughly 4 months after the end of The Pitt's season 2 finale.
So I guess start thinking about what kind of havoc Thanksgiving can wreak on a Pennsylvania hospital - the writers of The Pitt season 3 might just be doing the same.
Will The Pitt return for season 4?
As of writing, the show hasn't been renewed for a fourth season. (For context, the third season was only officially confirmed in January 2026, a day ahead of the show's second season premiere.) However, the show's success both critically and in terms of ratings - the second season grew 50% on average from its season 1 audience - would suggest that a fourth season is likely.
