The Magic: The Gathering makers are worried players might get weird if human-type cards can be saddled (but be weird!)

We get it, you want to make a dragon angel as your steed in Magic: The Gathering, but don’t count on it happening

If you ever had to ride into battle in a fantasy story, what creature would you choose as your steed? Personally, I would go for a grizzly bear, but I have played a D&D campaign where we rode around on hyenas. What I discovered at MagicCon Las Vegas 2026 is that there are lots of Magic players who would choose to ride on an angel dragon.

At the 'You Make The Unknown Card!' panel hosted by Wizards of the Coast's senior game & product designer Gavin Verhey at MagicCon Vegas, the attendees in the room were collectively creating an angel dragon with Verhey gathering ideas for the card from members of the audience. When it came to selecting abilities for the angel dragon card, a confident audience member suggested “Saddle,” to which Verhey’s face instantly turned into an expression of shock, amusement, and judgment all at the same time, while the rest of the room burst out laughing with scattered “Oooh”s.

“We usually try not to make people mount other humanoids for reasons that may become apparent, but it is a dragon, so [I’ll allow it],” Verhey said, as more laughter filled the room.

As it turns out, the audience was really behind (on board with?) the whole saddle idea for the angel dragon, because it got enough votes to make the final version of the card created at the panel. Magic players, never change. Your quirks certainly keep these panels interesting.
