For the Hobbit set, Magic: The Gathering had to break an unofficial internal rule because Smaug is so iconic

Think of the last time the headliner card from a Magic: The Gathering set featured a villain. You probably can’t, right?

That’s because the game purposefully chooses to pick heroic characters as the headliner cards from most its Universes Within sets and Universes Beyond crossover sets. Not even an iconic villain on the level of Sephiroth from Final Fantasy was the headliner for the best-selling Magic set. It was a Traveling Chocobo instead!

This, however, leads to why the upcoming Magic: The Gathering x The Hobbit set is so special, because the set’s headliner is the villainous dragon known as Smaug. The headliner card is Smaug, the Magnificent, and the rarest version of the card is the gleaming gold variant, which you can check out below.

At MagicCon Las Vegas 2026, the set’s creative leads, Annie Sardelis and Nick Marcantel, noted that “We don’t often do villainous headliners,” but Smaug is “such an iconic character,” they couldn’t pass up the opportunity to put him front and center. This is Magic: The Gathering after all, who doesn’t love a giant dragon who loves hoarding treasure?

Magic: The Gathering x The Hobbit will hit shelves at your local gaming shop on August 14, 2026. So you have a few more months to prepare for your quest to find Smaug. May the odds ever be in your favor.
