Okay, that's subjective, but Kraven's Last Hunt has had an enormous impact on both Spider-Man comics and American comics at large because of its mature and psychological storyline. It takes place during a time when Peter Parker was in his emo era with the black Spider-Man suit, and it digs into how being Spider-Man drives a wedge between him and his love, Mary Jane Watson, while fueling an obsession that one of his longtime enemies, Kraven the Hunter, has with him. The story explores the psycho-emotional experience of getting dressed up in an outlandish costume every night, taking a refreshingly human approach to comic book characters. There's also a William Blake poem that is heavily featured in the main story included in this collection. If you want the budget version of Kraven's Last Hunt (that includes just the issues from the original storyline, you can get it here). 

Long story short, if you don't believe that comics are literature after reading Kraven's Last Hunt, then you didn't actually read it.

We're also a fan of how the different stories of the building are detachable, meaning there are endless ways to customize how you want to display your own Daily Bugle in your home or office. I've seen this fully constructed set in person and can confirm that it is an impressive centerpiece for any LEGO devotee.

6. Ultimate Spider-Man vol. 1 by Jonathan Hickman and Marco Checchetto

 

Why it's a great gift: You can't go wrong with Ultimate Spider-Man by Jonathan Hickman and Marco Checchetto. It's one of the most critically acclaimed Spider-Man comics of the decade, and since it's set in an alternate universe, it requires absolutely no previous comic book knowledge to enjoy it. It's set in Marvel's Ultimate Universe, where Peter Parker is a middle-aged family man who subsequently becomes Spider-Man. It's a grown-up (but not dark or gratuitous) take on Spider-Man that will please longtime Spider-Man fans who are looking to get back into comics.

7. The Superior Spider-Man Omnibus vol. 1

 

Look, everyone and their mom knows Spider-Man, but The Superior Spider-Man series by Dan Slott and Humberto Ramos is Spider-Man as you've never seen him before, because freaking Doctor Octopus takes over Peter Parker's body and becomes Spider-Man. Yes, you read that right: the Alfred Molina character from Spider-Man 2 with the goggles and mechanical arms coming out of his back becomes Spider-Man. And he uses his newfound great power to try to one-up Peter Parker at every turn. The Superior Spider-Man series is a rare example of big, creative swings that manage to stick the landing, and having it in omnibus form brings some serious street cred. If you've got a Spider-Man fan who thinks they've seen and read it all, then they ain't seen Superior Spider-Man yet.

8. Miles Morales: Spider-Man Vol. 1 Trial by Spider

It wouldn't be a proper Spider-Man gift guide without a proper Miles Morales recommendation, and we've got you covered. The Miles Morales: Spider-Man series written by Cody Ziglar is the character's strongest run yet because of how Ziglar deepens the hero's relationships with his friends and family. There are some very comic book-y elements to this series, but they're emotionally grounded within human reality, which is quintessential for any great Marvel story.
