Michael Walsh's unannounced DC revamp is "a character that's been around in DC for a very long time" and "very scary"

"We're pushing the boundaries of what a core DC book will look like and can do," says Silver Coin creator Michael Walsh

If you've been a visitor to Popverse lately, chances are you've noticed how exited we are about DC's Next Level line. The post-DC KO comic series, which puts the spotlight on B-tier DC characters such as Deathstroke, Lobo, and Batwoman, is publishing some wholly unique takes on DC's heroes and villains by recruiting some of the best names in the biz... names like Michael Walsh.

Walsh, who originated the Image Comics horror anthology Silver Coin and is currently working on indie hit Exquisite Corpses with James Tynion IV, was recently a guest at C2E2 2026, where the artist did us the kindness of stopping by our Pop Spot interview space. Naturally, we wanted to know all we could about Walsh's still-unidentified DC Next Level Comic, and though we'll tell you right now that he wasn't able to give us the character on its covers, he was able to share a lot of other details.

"I can say that it is referential of some of the other things that I've done over the last few years," began the artist, "Tonally speaking. I can say that it's a character that's been around in DC for a very long time, but hasn't really had a hit book in in quite a while. I can say that I'm writing and drawing the book in that Toni-Marie Griffin will be coloring the book. Brittany Holzer, the incredible Britney, and James Reid are the editors on the book."

"It's going to be very scary," Walsh continued, "And we're pushing the boundaries of what a core DC book will look like and can do in really exciting ways. It's not going to be your typical DC superhero book; I will tell you that. We're really taking some swings with it and DC's been incredibly supportive of all the all the things that I want to do and the ideas that I've had for it."

I'm thinking the same thing you are, DC fan: which horror-leaning DC character hasn't had a hit book in a while? We already know that Jack Kirby's The Demon is slated for a Next Level Book, so that character could fit what Walsh is describing here. At the same time, Scott Snyder recently confirmed that there were more DC Next Level books that still have yet to be announced, so there's a possibility Walsh's book could be in that category as well.

What we do know, comics reader, is that as soon as we know what kind of horrors Walsh is bringing to the DCU, you'll be the first to hear about it. In the meantime, you can watch our full interview here:
