Marvel's strategy of relaunches & brief 'ongoings' during one longer run is a "marketing" decision, but doesn't change the story for Infernal Hulk writer Phillip Kennedy Johnson

No, Marvel Comics did not cancel The Infernal Hulk by Phillip Kennedy Johnson and Nic Klein

A story like 'The Infernal Saga' in the pages of The Incredible Hulk and Infernal Hulk by Phillip Kennedy Johnson and Nic Klein is rare today in Marvel & DC comics, because it is a sprawling epic that doesn't fit neatly into a single ongoing series. 'The Infernal Saga' initially launched with The Incredible Hulk #1 in 2023 and moved into its second phase with The Infernal Hulk #1 in 2025. But when online speculation that the story was canceled bloomed from Marvel revealing the ongoing series was ending after just 10 issues, Johnson and Klein confirmed to fans that no, the Infernal Saga was not over. The next chapter of it is to begin after Infernal Hulk wraps with issue #10.

At C2E2 2026, we sat down with Phillip Kennedy Johnson to discuss his and Klein's Infernal Hulk series and what he made of the internet's reaction to Infernal Hulk's end with issue #10.

"The question of whether it was limited or ongoing was a little bit obscured by the nature of what's coming next. It's not simply 'ten issues of Infernal Hulk, followed by this other book #1,' there's some other stuff in between that- even saying that it's ending at ten is not completely accurate. I can't really spoil what's going to be happening after number ten, but I will say that it is still very much continuing the story of Infernal Hulk that trails off with ten," Johnson began.

He continued, "The story that we are telling is exactly the story I've been pitching since the very beginning. And how they sell each issue, as far as marketing, branding, and stuff like that, those are not my decisions to make. There are other departments in Marvel that do their best to communicate with retailers and fans to sell the book, to promote the book. Those are all the jobs of other people. I write the scripts, and the story is the one that I've been trying to tell. We're not all in the same room together when those decisions are made. They just want the most people to buy each issue and to read the story."

Ultimately, it's not up to Johnson or Klein to decide how the Infernal Saga will be marketed and publicized while they're in the throes of creating it. And to be clear, a story like the Infernal Saga isn't completely without precedent over the past decade of publishing at Marvel. Jason Aaron's multi-year Thor saga spanned multiple series and title relaunches, and has now been collected into two neat omnibuses. Given that the next leg of the Infernal Saga is set to commence in 2027 with Hulk War (and will feature lots of Skaar!), there is still much to look forward to.
