The Marvel Universe is filled with lots of movers and shakers, but who is the most powerful character? There are cosmic entities that have the power to rewrite reality, mutants with untold power levels, and villains who could almost qualify as gods. Here at Popverse, we’re a bit crazy about Marvel, so we thought it would be fun to dive into our comic book longboxes to try and figure out who the strongest character is. After going through hundreds of pages and looking at tons of cosmic battles, we found our answer.  

How we determine the strongest Marvel character

Determining the strongest Marvel character is tricky, because sometimes the power levels of a character are inconsistent from story to story. It also becomes a rock-paper-scissors situation, because the Thing has defeated Molecule Man (Marvel Two-in-One #1), but that doesn’t mean the Thing is more powerful than Molecule Man. The nature of superhero comics is that even the most powerful heroes and villains get defeated from time to time, so power is subjective.

To determine who the strongest Marvel characters were, we looked at the strongest entities at the peak of their power and compared them to one another. Some characters have been powered up or depowered as time has gone by. For example, the Beyonder’s power levels have been retconned and rewritten for decades. Cosmic artifacts have also powered up characters like Thanos and Doctor Doom. In cases like these, we’ve used the strongest version of the character.

For instance, Thanos is number 3 in our ranking, but that’s because of the time he was powered up by the Heart of the Universe. Without the Heart of the Universe, Thanos wouldn’t make the top ten. We considered leaving off temporary power-ups, but that becomes a slippery slope. After all, if Iron Man’s armor or Spider-Man’s webshooters count as part of their power levels, artifacts like the Heart of the Universe qualify for Thanos, even if they’re temporary.

With that, let’s dive into our ranking.

Ranking Marvel’s 10 strongest characters

10 – Oblivion

A cosmic entity that represents non-existence. Oblivion can remove people from existence, bring people back, create life, and empower others. Oblivion is a sibling of Eternity and the Living Tribunal, two other cosmic entities on this list. As his name implies, Oblivion is driven by a desire to destroy everything around him.

Weaknesses: Oblivion’s power is not absolute, and there are times when he can’t bring others back from the dead. He can also be physically overpowered, as seen in Iceman #4 (1985).

9 – Eternity

A cosmic entity that represents the universe. Eternity is nearly omnipotent, with the power to manipulate time, space, and reshape reality. For the most part, Eternity stays out of the day-to-day affairs of the universe, only manifesting when there is a major threat, such as Thanos obtaining the Heart of the Universe.

Weaknesses: Eternity is nearly omnipotent, but they’ve been shown to be vulnerable against other cosmic entities. Thanos once used the Infinity Gauntlet to imprison Eternity, the Beyonders temporarily destroyed Eternity, and Nightmare once used his power to put Eternity to sleep.

8 – The Phoenix Force

An immortal cosmic entity that represents life, death, and rebirth. The Phoenix Force has nearly infinite cosmic powers, which it can use to teleport, transform matter, resurrect others, and on rare occasions it can even manipulate time itself. The Phoenix Force is extremely destructive, as seen in Uncanny X-Men #135 (1980) when it consumed an entire star, causing it to go supernova and destroy a nearby inhabited planet. The Pheonix Force has attached itself to a series of hosts over the years, including Jean Grey.

Weaknesses: When attaching itself to a host, the Phoenix Force is limited by the stamina and durability of its host body. The Pheonix Force has also been shown to be vulnerable to some forms of magic.

7 – Franklin Richards

The son of Reed Richards and Susan Storm. Due to his parents’ unique physiology, Franklin was born with phenomenal cosmic powers. For a time, it was believed Franklin was a mutant, but he appears to be something more. The adolescent has been powered up and depowered many times over the years, but at his peak Franklin has the ability to create entire multiverses, reshape reality, see the future, create cosmic blasts, and read minds.

Weaknesses: In early stories Franklin’s biggest weakness is his young mind. Although he has great power, his young body and mind couldn’t fully comprehend it, so he didn’t have a complete mastery of his abilities. At times his powers have been locked by mental dampeners in his mind. As a young adult, Franklin has more mastery of his abilities, but he’s chosen to rewrite his genes so he could only use them one day a year.

6 – The Living Tribunal

A cosmic entity that acts as the personification of law in the Marvel Universe. The Living Tribunal acts as the judge, jury, and executioner for cosmic matters in the multiverse. They have the power to warp reality, and in Warlock and the Infinity Watch #1, they were shown to have the power to nullify the Infinity Gems. The Living Tribunal answers to the One Above All, the creator of the universe.

Weaknesses: The Living Tribunal has three faces, and all faces must reach a consensus before it can take action. The Living Tribunal has been temporarily destroyed by the Beyonders, and by Thanos while using the Heart of the Universe in the non-canon story Marvel Universe: The End.

5 – Molecule Man

A former lab technician named Owen Reece who gained the power to rearrange molecules. In his early appearances, Reece believed he could only manipulate non-organic matter and thought he needed a wand to use his abilities. As he grew more confident in himself, he realized he could manipulate all molecules without his wand, including those which make up living creatures. During the 2015 Secret Wars event, Molecule Man was shown to have the ability to destroy and recreate the entire multiverse, and in some cases rewrite history itself. In fact, Molecule Man rewrote Miles Morales’s family history, so they always lived on Earth-616 instead of Earth-1610.

Weaknesses: Like others on this list, Molecule Man’s abilities depend on the story, and his powers have been retconned more than once. Molecule Man’s biggest weakness is his own mind, which has placed mental blocks on his abilities. Reece has a high spot on this list due to the fact that he’s gone toe-to-toe with the Beyonder on numerous occasions and has been shown to be more than a match for the cosmic entity.

4 – The Beyonder

An omnipotent being who seems to have the power to end all of existence with a thought. Or maybe he’s just an Inhuman Mutant with delusions of grandeur. Honestly, the Beyonder’s deal is in flux, because the nature of who he is has been retconned on multiple occasions. When the character was introduced in Marvel Super Heroes Secret Wars, he was shown to be as omnipotent as they come, with the power to alter reality, create anything, transport planets, and destroy the universe with a thought.

In Secret Wars II he decided to try becoming a human for a while, which is where he began to sport his iconic (and dated) Jheri curl look. Subsequent stories depowered him, and then later stories powered him back up. It’s kind of a mess. It was later revealed that he’s part of a race of other omnipotent beings known as the Beyonders.

Weaknesses: Although the Beyonder is omnipotent, Doctor Doom was able to steal his powers in Marvel Super Heroes Secret Wars. The Beyonder is also ignorant about humanity, and in Secret Wars II #2 Spider-Man had to teach him how to use the bathroom. The Beyonder’s biggest weakness is his own curiosity and fragile mental state, which caused him to depower himself and become vulnerable in Secret Wars II.

3 – Heart of the Universe Thanos

If you thought Thanos was powerful with the Infinity Gauntlet, then you should see the Titan when he wields the Heart of the Universe. As seen in Marvel Universe: The End, the artifact allowed Thanos to become one with all of existence, and absorb the powers of the Living Tribunal, Eternity, and other cosmic entities. Thanos collapses the entire multiverse, leaving himself as the last surviving entity (he put it back together later). It should be noted that these events took place in an alternate timeline separate from Marvel’s 616 universe.

Weaknesses: It is implied, but not confirmed, that the One Above All was secretly pulling the strings for Thanos. Other than that, the Heart of the Universe Thanos was shown to be all-powerful, with the only limit being his own mind.  

2 – God Emperor Doom

In the 2015 event Secret Wars, Doctor Doom stole the powers of the Beyonders and used it to recreate all of reality in his image. Christening himself God Emperor Doom, Victor had the power to rewrite existence, create life, and destroy anything with a mere thought. The inhabitants of the multiverse worshipped Doom as their god, but Doom’s own vanity caused him to accidentally give his powers up.

Weaknesses: God Emperor Doom had virtually no weaknesses, other than his own ego. Reed Richards was able to exploit Doom’s vanity and trick the villain into giving up his powers. In other words, if Doctor Doom was less petty, he would still be God Emperor Doom today.

1 – One Above All 

The One Above All is the most supreme cosmic entity in the Marvel Universe. They are the creator of everything in existence and are the personification of all that is good in reality. When they first appeared in Fantastic Four #511, the One Above All took the form of Jack Kirby, the artist responsible for co-creating many of Marvel’s most iconic characters and concepts. They can create, destroy, give life, rewrite reality, and do anything you can imagine – sometimes with a pencil.

Weaknesses: Almost none. However, Incredible Hulk #5 (2023) has shown that it’s possible for the One Above All to be corrupted by outside forces.

Who is Marvel’s most powerful character

A being known as the One Above All is the most powerful character in the Marvel Universe. The One Above All is the creator of everything in the Marvel Universe and is said to be more powerful than every other cosmic entity. In short, if God exists in the Marvel Universe, this is who he is. At times the One Above All has appeared in the form of Jack Kirby, the artist who co-created many of Marvel’s most notable characters.

Who is the No. 1 powerful Avenger?

The Phoenix Force is the No.1 powerful Avenger. Yes, we know the Phoenix Force is more associated with the X-Men, but the cosmic entity has been an Avenger as well. For example, it possessed Maya Lopez in Avengers #55 (2022) and it once used a Stone Age era Avenger named Firehair as its host. The Phoenix Force has the power to wipe out entire star systems, reshape reality, and feed off entire planets. In the wrong hands, it can be a very powerful weapon.

Who is stronger than Thanos?

Many Marvel characters are stronger than Thanos, including Hulk, Captain Marvel, and Silver Surfer. When Thanos is powered by the Infinity Gauntlet or the Heart of the Universe, he’s much more powerful, and only a few people could beat him. Keep in mind, this all depends on the writer and artist, but by our estimation, the only characters who are stronger than Heart of the Universe Thanos are God Emperor Doom and the One Above All.

Who is the strongest character in the MCU?

Eternity is the strongest character in the MCU. The cosmic entity was seen in the 2022 film Thor: Love and Thunder. Eternity is a cosmic manifestation of reality that exists at the dawn of time. Eternity is shown to have the ability to reshape reality, which it uses to revive Gorr’s daughter Love.

The existence of the Living Tribunal has been hinted at in the MCU, and if they’re anything like their comic counterpart, they would be more powerful than Eternity. However, to date, Eternity is the most powerful character in the MCU.
