Hulk is having a hell of a time right now in Marvel Comics - literally. Phillip Kennedy Johnson and Nic Klein's Infernal Hulk series picks up from the events of their previous run on The Incredible Hulk, exposing a meaner side to the Jade Giant that you've never seen before. Instead of the puny Bruce Banner inside the Hulk, it's a demonic entity known as the Eldest, keeping Banner and the Hulk separate from each other. Now, things are continuing to heat up in the pages of Infernal Hulk, with an event known as Hulk War looming on the horizon in 2027, which Marvel has teased as "The culmination of the Infernal Saga."
At C2E2 2026, we sat down with Phillip Kennedy Johnson to talk all things Hulk, and how Infernal Hulk thus far has laid the groundwork for the upcoming Hulk War clash.
"So act one was obviously extremely Hulk-centric, as every act is, but it really was about Hulk and Charlie and Banner, about those three characters more than anyone else. And there were cameos, like we introduced Ghost Rider '44, and we did the spin-off Hellhunters series, and we been showing cameos with other, you know, other Hellhunters members. And we just teased in Dungeons of Doom that Hellhunters are going to return. So, act one was about putting all the pieces on the board while really getting in the weeds with the hate triangle of Hulk, Banner, and Charlie," Johnson began.
"Act two has a lot more interactivity with other members of the Marvel Universe. We start to see other players really start to take notice of what Hulk is doing. We see Namor, we see the Avengers, we're about to see the X-Men. That's going to ramp up and up and up until we get to Hulk War. Hulk War is about, as we've seen in the Hulkscape, all the different Hulk alters are still in there. And without spoiling it too much, Hulk War is the act in which we see multiple Hulks against each other," Johnson said.
Just as a refresher, some of the Hulk alters we've seen in Infernal Hulk's Hulkscape have been Savage Hulk (the most chaotic version of the character), Joe Fixit (the Gray Hulk), and Green Scar (the Hulk from Greg Pak's Planet Hulk and World War Hulk era). For those of us itching for a Hulk-themed smackdown, keep your eyes and ears peeled for Hulk War coming in 2027.
