Avengers Armageddon reading order (Updated September 2026): Marvel is promising its biggest Avengers shakeup since Disassembled
How to read Avengers Armageddon: The complete Marvel reading order from Captain America to Wolverine.

The Avengers are ending.
Or, at least, that’s what Marvel Comics wants us to believe. Avengers: Armageddon is now underway, and the five-issue Marvel event promises a “transformative shakeup” that will change Earth’s Mightiest Heroes and launch a new era for the Avengers later in 2026. Think 2004’s Avengers Disassembled, when Scarlet Witch tore the team apart (and, in some cases, killed its members_ before Marvel rebuilt the franchise around the New Avengers.
Avengers: Armageddon is written by Chip Zdarsky (Batman, Spectacular Spider-Man, Sex Criminals) and grows directly out of his current Captain America run. Zdarsky is joined by artists Frank Alpizar and Delio Diaz (Doomed 2099, Terminus Veil, Time Sensitive) and cover artist Dike Ruan. With the previous flagship Avengers series over and Marvel already promising something new in its place, Armageddon isn’t simply another Avengers crossover: it’s the bridge to whatever comes next.
Here’s everything you need to know about Marvel’s Avengers: Armageddon, including its story, issue count, release schedule, tie-ins, and complete reading order.
What is Avengers: Armageddon about?
The road to Avengers: Armageddon began with 2025’s One World Under Doom, in which Marvel’s heroes fought to stop Doctor Doom from taking control of the world. The good news is that they defeated him. The bad news is that Thaddeus 'Thunderbolt' Ross (better known as Red Hulk) subsequently seized Doom’s homeland of Latveria and began showing some disturbingly Doom-like ambitions of his own.
Those ambitions became open tensions in The Will of Doom and Zdarsky’s Captain America, before boiling over in Wolverine: Weapons of Armageddon. That series revealed the return of the Weapon X program, which is now creating super-soldiers for a war that appears increasingly inevitable.
“When the Avengers assemble against [Red Hulk], explosive escalations will force them to unleash a power that changes how the world views their mightiest heroes forever,” reads Marvel’s description of Avengers: Armageddon. “This pivotal chapter will lead directly into a new era of Avengers starting later this year.”
And Marvel isn’t being coy about the aftermath: The publisher has already revealed that the Maximum X-Men will rise to fill the void left by the Avengers after Armageddon.
How many issues is Avengers: Armageddon?
The main Avengers: Armageddon comic is a five-issue limited series. That’s the essential story and the shortest reading order for anyone who only wants to follow the central event.
However, the complete Avengers: Armageddon crossover is considerably larger. Add the official Captain America tie-in issues and the Armageddon/X-Men #1 Comics Giveaway Day Edition prequel, and the event expands to 11 issues.
Chip Zdarsky has also identified several earlier Marvel comics as prequels or prologues to the event. When those stories are added to the five-issue series and its official crossover chapters, the complete Avengers: Armageddon reading order contains 22 issues.
In other words: You can read the five core issues for the streamlined version, the 11-issue crossover for the full event, or all 22 chapters if you want every piece of Zdarsky’s intended story.
Avengers: Armageddon reading order
Although the event officially began with Avengers: Armageddon #1 on June 10, 2026, Zdarsky’s larger story was already unfolding across Captain America, The Will of Doom, Wolverine: Weapons of Armageddon, and other Marvel comics. With that in mind, we’re assembling (naturally) a complete Avengers: Armageddon reading order and updating it as each new issue is released.
