What are we all at Popverse enjoying this weekend?
The TV, movies, and comics that the Popverse team is planning on checking out this weekend
As Michael Nesmith once poignantly moaned, well, it looks like we made it once again; yes, it looks like we made it to the end. The end of the work week, of course, which means two things - firstly, welcome to the weekend, and secondly, it's time for another installment of What are we all enjoying this weekend.
This week, we were unimpressed by the Kraven the Hunter trailer, but got excited about a new Ram V/Filipe Andrade collaboration. We published essays about why Nightwing is DC's most experimental comic, and the return of Marvel's Ultimate Universe, as well as interviews with Christopher Priest and Pornsak Pichetshote. Really, we're spoiling you with all of this. While we're doing that, we're also thinking about... well, things like this...!
Ashley V. Robinson (Video Producer):
This weekend I’m pretty confident Illianna and I are starting SIX OF CROWS together! She’s done a great job making fun documentation of our Buddy Read on Instagram. #TeamNikolai has taken RUIN AND RISING pretty hard, to say the least.
Beyond our perpetual journey through the Grishaverse this weekend is my last weekend to catch up or prep on anything before I head to Florida Supercon next week! THE BOYS is going to be my weekend binge and may Reed Pop folx have assured me it’s going to be a great watch. Anything with Éomer in it has got to be a fun time, right?
Chris Arrant (Editor in Chief):
As you're reading this, I'm up to my elbows in the Cure music ahead of taking some time off to see them during their US tour (Ask me for a playlist, and I'll give you one!).
As for what's going into my eyeballs, I am re-reading some late '80s and early '90s Fantastic Four comics based on a conversation I had recently with Matt Brady. It's not the idealized Fantastic Four we have now in comics, or the one that has been codified as the Fantastic Four. It's odd, it's uneven, and it's testy. And I'm really enjoying it. And I haven't even arrived at the Art Adams issues yet.
Graeme McMillan (Staff Writer):
Beyond being excited to have dinner with visiting fellow Popversian Tiffany Babb tonight (if you’re reading this on Friday), I’m also excited to continue revisiting Darwyn Cooke’s masterful reboot of Will Eisner’s The Spirit, which I’ve been dipping in and out of in the last couple of days. I’m purposefully taking this re-read slowly to fully appreciate the series, which is at once the perfect follow-up to Cooke’s DC: The New Frontier and a note-perfect update and tribute to what Eisner was doing in the original Spirit run of the 1940s. It’s a curiously overlooked run, but it’s a long-term favorite of mine, and one that I get more out of each time I go back to it.
I'm also very curious about Chris's Cure playlist, now that he's mentioned it... After re-reading John Harris' The Last Party the other week (published in the US as Britpop! Cool Britannia and the Spectacular Demise of English Rock), I've been revisiting a lot of 1990s British pop music recently, but maybe I should go further back and give prime Cure a listen...
Illlianna Gonzalez-Soto (Marketing Coordinator):
Wassup fellow nerds. This week I will be finishing Ruin and Rising with Ashley, which will take us to THE CROWS. Very exciting development I must say. I haven’t watched The Flash, and I’m not sure if I will, although I could be persuaded to watch SpiderVerse again, because HELLO IT’S THE BEST. I’ll also be beginning to find homes for 4 baby kitties that I’ve been fostering, the fifth of which I am probably keeping and naming Meows Morales. Stay tuned for that development next week.
I may also rewatch The Witcher in preparation for s3. Although this past weekend I ended up spending most of my time outdoors, as I went to the beach 3 days in a row and would like to do it again so I can read the day away in the sunshine.
Tiffany Babb (Deputy Editor):
This weekend, I am on a trip to Portland (#MidnightTraintoThirty is the best hashtag I could come up with, forgive me). Because I am traveling, I will be, as is my tradition, listening to a lot of podcasts about the history of the place I'm heading. So hopefully, I'll have some new Portland facts to share with the group next week. I'm also slowly listening my way through Josie Riesman's book Ringmaster: Vince McMahon and the Unmaking of America. As someone who knows absolutely nothing about wrestling or about Vince McMahon, the book has been WILD so far.
Veronica Valencia (Video Producer):
I was hoping this weekend would be just nice enough to spend the day beachside, and wouldn't you know it, it's supposed to rain all weekend! So I'll be reading "Love Theoretically," the newest book by Ali Hazelwood, inside under a blanket instead of on a blanket under the sun. This book will be 4 of 4 I've read from this author, and I would highly recommend these reads if anyone is looking for a cute, romance book. I'm also looking forward to Saturday morning when another episode of My Love Story with Yamada-kun at Lv999 drops. This will be episode 13 which I ttthhhhiiiinnnkkkk is the final episode of the season? Usually anime these days are anywhere from 12-13 episodes a season and so I can only assume we are at that 'season finale' point in the season. I am ready for the sparks to fly!
