That's the end of the list for now, but we'll be updating it every time an upcoming horror movie is announced. And before we leave you, here are a couple of horror FAQs we've seen you asking online, and that we hope to answer.

What is the Number 1 ranked horror movie of all time?

With the caveat that rankings are absolutely subjective, here are a couple of the highest rated horror movies from some of the most trusted movie ranking sites on the internet:

  • On IMDb, the highest ranked horror movie is Alien (1979), with an average score of 8.5 stars from 1 million (!) reviews
  • On Letterboxd, the highest ranked horror movie is Perfect Blue (1997), with an average score of 4.4 stars from 39K reviews
  • On Rotten Tomatoes, the highest ranked horror movie is Jaws (1975), with an average score of 90% on the  Popcornmeter from 250K reviews

Writer Greg Silber has also put together Popverse's list of The Best Horror Movies of All Time (which we're pretty comfortable standing by), which puts Hereditary (2018) on top as #1.

What's the highest grossing horror movie ever?

This one's a bit easier to answer, since all we have to do is look at some box office numbers. If we do that, we'll find at the top of the list 2017's It, which raked in a staggering $702,781,748 during its global theatrical run. We'll all float, as Pennywise says, but I don't know many of us that float that much.

What was the first horror film ever made?

You may think the answer to this is the 1922 F.W Murnau-directed Nosferatu, the remake of which the world is still reeling from. However, by the time that Nosferatu was coming to theaters in Europe, the short horror flick Le Manoir du Diable (translated to either The House of the Devil or the Haunted Castle) was already celebrating its silver jubilee, having first come to early theaters in 1896.

That's right, pretty much as long as movies have existed, they've had horror amongst their ranks. And as you can probably tell by now, that's not going to change anytime soon.

In the immortal words of Danny Elfman, "Life's no fun without a good scare." We couldn't agree more, which is why we've cobbled together a couple pieces to send a chill up your spine. Join Popverse as we explore:

And much gore. Er, more. Much more.

As Popverse's Staff Writer, he criss-crosses the pop culture landscape bringing you the news and opinions about the big things (and the next big things). In the past, and despite their better judgment, he has written for Nightmare on Film Street and Newsarama. He lives in Brooklyn with his partner, Kingsley, and corgi, Legs.
