Do you ever feel like the universe is gaslighting you? That’s exactly what happened to Dr. Beverly Crusher in the Star Trek: The Next Generation episode ‘Remember Me.’ Dr. Crusher unknowingly gets trapped in a pocket universe which is meant to mimic our own, and she slowly begins to surmise that something is off. For example, many of her friends and colleagues begin to vanish, and all records of their existence are erased.
The remaining crew members in the simulation try to gaslight Dr. Crusher, telling her she’s wrong, implying that she’s losing her mind. This leads to an iconic moment where Dr. Crusher says, “If there’s nothing wrong with me, maybe there’s something wrong with the universe.” This epiphany leads to Beverly realizing the nature of the pocket universe and escaping.
This moment stuck with Gates McFadden, who played Dr. Crusher on the show. Not only is it her favorite line from the series, but it’s one that has become a personal mantra to her. “I can’t remember any of my technobabble from the medical stuff, but my favorite line was, ‘Well, since there’s nothing wrong with me, there must be something wrong with the universe.’ I live by it,” Gates McFadden revealed during a panel at Spacecon 2026.
True, the quote was slightly different, but the spirit of it remains the same. For Gates, and for the people in the audience who repeated the phrase as she recited it, the line serves as a reminder to always be true to yourself, never doubt who you are, don’t let anyone tell you otherwise.
