After 18 years, fans will finally be able to see the original version of X-Files: I Want to Believe

Disney and series creator Chris Carter are working together to finally give us the definitive version of X-Files: I Want to Believe after 18 years

The truth is out there... but sometimes, it takes 18 years to be found.

In 2008, 20th Century Fox released the movie X-Files: I Want to Believe, the second X-Files movie, directed and co-written by series creator Chris Carter. What fans might now know is, it wasn’t the version of the film we were meant to see, with Carter forced by the studio to remove some body horror moments, unsettling scenes, and other pieces of disturbing material.

Now we’ll finally be able to see that version of the movie. “Chris has been recutting the second movie,” Fox Mulder actor David Duchovny announced during a panel at Spacecon 2026. “I haven’t seen it, but I think whoever owns Fox these days, I guess it’s Disney, I don’t know – I guess it will come out on Disney very soon. I think there was a lot of stuff that happened around the release of that movie that Chris kind of massaged to be into a shape that maybe was not the only shape that he wanted. So, I think this is his version of what he wanted.”

Sure enough, a director’s cut of X-Files: I Want to Believe was originally supposed to drop on Disney+ on June 11, but it’s been delayed. As of this writing, the new release date hasn’t been announced. (It's been 18 years; a little bit longer of a wait seems like nothing, in comparison.)
