Spider-Man voice actor Christopher Daniel Barnes was just as surprised about the X-Men ’97 cameo as you were

Despite the X-Men ’97 cameo, Christopher Daniel Barnes says there are no plans for a Spider-Man ’94 type revival (but he would love to do it)

One of the biggest cliffhangers in Spider-Man media was finally solved, and it happened in an X-Men project. The 1994 Spider-Man animated series ended with Mary Jane Watson still lost in a time dilation portal, with Spidey and Madame Web preparing to search for her. The final episode aired in 1998 without MJ being found.

Spider-Man fans were able to breathe a sigh of relief in 2024 when Peter Parker and Mary Jane made a silent cameo appearance in X-Men ’97 season one. The series shares a continuity with the 1994 Spider-Man animated series, and in case there was any ambiguity about what the cameo meant,  X-Men ’97 season one showrunner Beau DeMayo posted on X, “Yes, Peter found MJ.” Peter and MJ had no dialogue in the episode, so there was no reason to bring back their original voice actors. In fact, Spider-Man voice actor Christopher Daniel Barnes was just as surprised as the rest of us were.

“It was a shock to me, and I wish there was something there. I hope there is. I would love it. I mean, to be a part of that would be incredible,” Christopher Daniel Barnes said during a panel at GalaxyCon Nashville 2026. “A lot of people have asked me that question. If there’s anything to it. If there’s going to be some kind of crossover. No one’s reached out to me, but I think that would be super cool. A lot of people have asked. It would be awesome. To be involved with Spider-Man in any capacity is a huge honor to me.”

As of now there are no plans for a Spider-Man ’94 style revival (aside from the recent comic series), but I think it would be cool to do it as a Disney+ animated movie. Maybe we could finally find out how Peter rescued Mary Jane.
