The ending of Fallout Season 2 showed how far a father will go to protect his daughter, but also how far he would go to protect his relationship with his daughter. Kyle MacLachlan, who plays doting father and genocidal madman Hank MacLean in Prime Video’s Fallout series, recently shared why he thinks his character had to take such drastic action at the end of Season 2 and how it might play into the already confirmed Fallout Season 3.
We’ll be discussing heavy spoilers for Fallout Season 2 below.
When confronted with his choice between his love for his daughter and his desire to subjugate the chaotic elements of the Wasteland, Hank MacLean found the surprise third option of wiping his own memory rather than deal with the consequences of his actions. It was shocking and emotional, as it robbed his daughter Lucy of the justice she had been seeking since she left Vault 33.
In a recent interview, Kyle MacLachlan explained how he approached the scene where Hank wipes his memory. “The ending to me,” he said. “I don’t really know where this is going to lead, but in my mind I said, ‘This is the evolution. This next step has to happen in order for what’s to come.’ I saw it as a sort of sacrifice but also inevitable. The hope is that it opens another door and we get to walk through into another interesting journey. He loves his daughter so much… I don’t know if that has any validity or not, we’ll [find] out, I guess!”
New Vegas is getting hit from every direction at the end of Fallout Season 2, with the NCR moving in just before the Legion make their move to conquer the city. How Lucy deals with that, and the sudden amnesia of her father, is likely to be a big factor in Season 3 when it comes to Prime Video.
Fallout Seasons 1 and 2 are streaming now on Prime Video.
