The Spiderwick Chronicles release date: When (and where) is the latest adaptation coming out

Disney's loss could be Roku's gain.

It has been long enough since the underwhelming Spiderwick Chronicles film that fans are ready to give another adaptation a try. Instead of another movie adaptation, we’re getting a full series to bring Tony DiTerlizzi and Holly Black’s novels to life. And we don’t need to wait much longer for The Spiderwick Chronicles series to debut.

The journey to bring a new Spiderwick Chronicles adaptation to life hasn’t exactly been a smooth one. Originally, it was being produced by Disney+, but they would take a page out of Warner Bros' book and scrap the series for cost-cutting reasons even though it was already completed. After shopping around, Roku Channel picked up The Spiderwick Chronicles series and would release it on April 19, 2024.

With the reveal that Christian Slater was joining the cast as Mulgarath the Ogre, it seems that The Spiderwick Chronicles will be condensing the events of the first several books to get to the main antagonist of the book series. The first season will consist of eight episodes that will all land on Roku Channel on the same day but, with the sudden change in network and Disney unlikely to produce more episodes in the future, the fate of future seasons is uncertain.

It is a shame because there are five books in the original Spiderwick Chronicles series and an additional three in the sequel series, titled Beyond the Spiderwick Chronicles, so there is plenty of material available to adapt. Even if Roku Channel finds itself with a hit on its hands, it will be difficult for it to reproduce the high production values that Disney could offer.

The Spiderwick Chronicles series releases on April 19, 2024 on Roku Channel.
