We love a good isekai, but what about an isekai within an isekai? That’s the gist of what we’ll be getting when The New Gate anime comes out in April 2024. The anime adaptation of Shinogi Kazanami’s popular light novel and manga series is one of the most anticipated titles in the upcoming anime season, with The New Gate’s season one release date coming up in just a few weeks.
The New Gate will premiere on April 13, 2024 in Japan with CLOUDHEARTS and Yokohama Animation Lab serving as the animation studios behind the adaptation. The series is being directed by Tamaki Nakatsu, who was previously an episode director for The Irregular at Magic High School.
The New Gate follows Shin, one of the thousands of players trapped in a life-or-death online game. Thanks to his peerless skill, he is on the cusp of freeing the players from the game when a bright light engulfs him and sends him 500 years into the game world’s future. Shin was the most powerful swordsman in the game, but now he finds himself in a strange land still working to earn his freedom.
It is a wonderfully meta concept that adds a slight twist to the Sword Art Online formula while still being familiar enough to catch people’s attention. The animation in the trailer even looks similar to what we saw in Sword Art Online, so we expect those comparisons to continue throughout the first season of The New Gate.
The New Gate anime premieres on April 13, 2024. International fans can catch new episodes weekly on Crunchyroll as part of their Spring 2024 anime lineup.
