The Fall Guy has the enviable position of being the first move starring Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt post Barbie/Oppenheimer season, carrying the buzz and sizzle surrounding the pair onto the big screen (as well as some other hot names in Black Panther’s Winston Duke, Ted Lasso’s Hannah Waddingham, and Everything Everywhere All At Once’s Stephanie Hsu) for a big sizzling summer movie. But how sizzly is the movie itself?
The plot behind The Fall Guy is mostly being kept out of the movie’s trailers and marketing, so we won’t spoil the movie for you. But here’s what you need to know: The Fall Guy is a love letter, to action romances, and to the stunt professionals behind our favorite action movies, and it’s a lot of fun.

You’re going to see big set pieces, you’re going to see over the top performances, you’re going to get a lot of jokes (It’s also going to be about 10-15 minutes longer than you think it should be, but such is life in 2024, isn’t it?), but perhaps most importantly for The Fall Guy, you get to see the wonderfully game Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt playing to the bit throughout the film.
In other words, there’s a lot of charm to The Fall Guy, even when it lags a bit and seems to knock you over the head with its romance early on instead of trusting its leads to just get the audience there. Is The Fall Guy the type of movie to change genres and keep you thinking for months? No, not really. The Fall Guy will have you chuckling throughout and marveling over its stunts, but it’s not groundbreaking, nor does it have to be. It’s a good time at the movie theater, what more do you want?
