Marvel has asked Peach Momoko to create new nightmare fuel for us (Thanks!)
On sale this December, Momoko's "Nightmare variants" are darkening Marvel's biggest titles.
Few artists can slide between ethereal beauty and skincrawling horror like Peach Momoko. But this December, Marvel has decided to let her lean more toward the latter side of that balance, as they've ordered an art series simply known as the "Nightmare Variant Covers."
Heading to comic shops in the winter of 2023, Momoko's variants will stretch across an as-of-yet unspecified line of comics. However, with horror-leaning titles like Venom, Hulk, and Blade running strong at the publisher, there's plenty of possible options.
Regular True Believers have seen plenty of Momoko's work on shelves in the past couple of years. Beginning as one of the talents from Marvel's 2020 'Stormbreakers' program, Momoko has gone on to not just be one of their most-used variant creators, but has been the creative force behind the artist-led Demon Days, which reimagines the Marvel Universe into a world inspired by Japanese folktales.
And since we're on the subject, Marvel has also promised Momoko fans more in the form of a brand new collection of Demon Days. Entitled Peach Momoko’s Demon Saga: Demon Days Black & White Edition, the upcoming book will collect Demon Days: X-Men #1, Demon Days: Mariko #1, Demon Days: Cursed Web #1, Demon Days: Rising Storm #1, Demon Days: Blood Feud #1, King in Black #4's Demon Days Prelude, and Elektra: Black, White & Blood #4, all reprinted in stunning black and white.
That collection will go on sale some time in 2024, though we don't have a specific date just now. But don't worry, at least we know when the Nightmare Variants are coming to comic shops: December 2023.
Still a bit of a wait, sure, but it'll be worth it.
In 2022, Peach Momoko found herself in the middle of a chaotic signing at NYCC. You can read her account of the story here.
