DC Studios Chapter 1: Gods and Monsters - what changed, what got added, and what went away after the first announcement

With The Authority being shelved for the time being and Waller in limbo, what remains of the initial DCU plans ahead of Supergirl's release in theaters?

It’s been more than three years since DC Studios unveiled what was, at the time, called ‘Chapter 1: Gods of Monsters’ — a slate of 10 initial projects that would launch the new DCU into the world. In the years since that first announcement, a lot has changed… including the emergence of all-new projects, the shelving of some of that first line-up, and the discovery of what the new DCU really looks like in practice. Here’s what stayed, what went away, and what replaced it.

As announced in early 2023, the launch slate for DC Studios looked like this:

  • Creature Commandos animated TV series in 2024
  • Waller live-action TV series in 2024
  • Superman: Legacy live-action movie on July 11, 2025
  • Lanterns live-action TV series
  • The Authority live-action movie
  • Paradise Lost live-action TV series
  • The Brave and the Bold live action movie
  • Booster Gold live-action TV series
  • Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow live-action movie
  • Swamp Thing live-action movie

We broke down what was originally announced about each of those projects here. As you can tell from the viewpoint of mid-2026, that initial plan didn’t entirely play out the way it was intended. Certainly the Creature Commandos animated series did come out on HBO Max in late 2024 (and has a second season in the works as you read this), but everything else was a little less straightforward.

Let’s start with the obvious: there was no Waller live-action TV series in 2024. The show is believed to remain in development, although DC Studios co-head James Gunn admitted in summer 2025, “Some things have moved faster than others. Waller’s not been the fastest.” More recently, in March 2026, HBO Max boss Casey Bloys said that “I wouldn’t say it’s on the runway.” Originally intended as a follow-up for Peacemaker Season 1, another project not on the Chapter 1: Gods and Monsters list ended up taking that place: a second season of Peacemaker, which ran in 2025.

Similarly, it’s now been confirmed that DC is hitting pause on The Authority movie, at least temporarily, due to a slower than expected development and other projects taking priority. Two of the initial 10 projects on the Gods and Monsters line-up have to some degree, for the time being, gone away even temporarily.

DC Studios Chapter 1: Gods and Monsters - What stayed in place

It’s not all been bad news, of course: Superman: Legacy did come out on July 11, 2025 albeit with a name change (It became, simply, Superman), and Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow is coming this summer, retitled Supergirl. Lanterns is still targeted for an August 2026 premiere even if the trailer for the show has been quietly pulled offline for reasons unknown, and development continues on Swamp Thing, Booster Gold, Paradise Lost, and The Brave and The Bold. Chapter 1: Gods and Monsters is, for the most part, intact… if, admittedly, taking longer and looking a little different than how it was first announced to the world.

DC Studios Chapter 1: Gods and Monsters - What got added

Part of that looking different comes from good things. October 23 will see the release of the third big screen DC Studios project, and it’s something that wasn’t even part of that first 2023 slate: Clayface, a horror movie written by Mike Flanagan that’s “very connected” to the wider DCU, according to James Gunn. Gunn is also behind Man of Tomorrow, the sequel to 2025’s Superman that similarly wasn’t part of Gods and Monsters launch announcement.. and might be the movie that replaces The Authority in the grander scheme of things, in that it’s not just a Superman story — it also includes Green Lantern and (if reports are to be believed) anti-hero Maxima. (Rumors persist that the Maxima role is a red herring, and Adria Arjona will actually be playing Wonder Woman; we’ll see.)

Gunn was also behind the aforementioned second season of Peacemaker that was added to the DC slate after that first 2023 announcement, and has already been released. Additionally, there’s an animated movie called Dynamic Duo that’s been added to the schedule for June 30, 2028, and the on-again, off-again Sgt. Rock movie project that came to public attention in 2025. All told, that’s five additional DCU projects that came about after the official 2023 announcement of the DC Studios slate. If nothing else, DC Studios has demonstrated that it’s a studio that’s willing to be agile and change plans when necessary in its brief existence.

DC Studios Chapter 1: Gods and Monsters - What it looks like now

So, what does DC Studios Chapter 1: Gods and Monsters really look like, as of writing? The answer is this:

2024:

  • Creature Commandos Season 1

2025:

  • Superman
  • Peacemaker Season 2

2026:

  • Supergirl
  • Lanterns Season 1
  • Clayface

2027:

  • Man of Tomorrow

2028:

  • Dynamic Duo

In active development/Unscheduled:

  • Paradise Lost
  • Booster Gold
  • Swamp Thing
  • The Brave and the Bold

Uncertain status:

  • Waller
  • The Authority
  • Sgt. Rock

And that’s to say nothing of the many DC Studios projects that exist outside the core DCU continuity, like The Batman Part II, the Mister Miracle animated series, and more. The onscreen DC Universe is growing... but even those in charge of it might be surprised by the shape it takes in the future.
