The slasher film genre has enjoyed a fantastic resurgence in the past several years, with movies like X and Pearl both embracing and subverting many of the classic slasher tropes. Now the third movie in the X series, MaXXXine, is due out later this year, but when will it hack its way into cinemas?
MaXXXine is the third entry in Ti West’s horror franchise that started with 2022’s X and is the first direct sequel to that film. Pearl, which also came out in 2022, was a prequel that explored the origins of the murderous woman at the heart of the first film. Now MaXXXine will follow on from that story when it is released on July 5, 2024 with a release on Max likely to follow shortly after.
After the success of the previous two films both at the box office and with critics, expectations are high for MaXXXine. It follows Mia Goth’s character from X six years later as she continues to pursue her dream of fame and fortune in 1980s Hollywood. This time, she is pursued by a killer known as the Night Stalker. Ti West has said that they originally envisioned the series as a trilogy but the success of the first two films has opened the door to the possibility of more in the future – it will just depend on if MaXXXine can replicate their success.
MaXXXine is due out on July 5, 2024 and stars Mia Goth, Elizabeth Debicki, and Moses Sumney, with Giancarlo Esposito and Kevin Bacon joining the cast for the third outing.
