Mad Max: Furiosa was a "very difficult" shoot that hurt, says star Anya Taylor-Joy

Anya Taylor-Joy fought to get the ending for Furiosa that she was wanted, but she says she wanted different things from the film than George Miller wanted.

It was always going to be difficult to make Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, but one of the most taxing things for star Anya Taylor-Joy was the demands from director George Miller. Taylor-Joy joined the movie hoping it would be action and motion, while Miller wanted her still to help the movie feel like a spaghetti western. The conflicting expectations made the entire shoot difficult for the young star, even as she fought to get the ending she felt the character needed.

In a wide-ranging interview, Anya Taylor-Joy discussed how she fought for the more brutal ending to Dementus that we saw in the movie. Every day, she went back to George Miller to make her case for Furiosa getting to exact a specific kind of revenge on her tormentor. Despite eventually getting the ending she wanted, Taylor-Joy remains somewhat tight-lipped about her experience on the set of Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga

“It’s a very difficult conversation to have,” she said. “If I were to be completely honest about my experience, it would hurt nobody but myself.”

Her biggest accomplishment on the movie, she believes, is the ending, which allows Furiosa to engage in exactly the kind of brutality that she felt was warranted after everything she went through. Exacting the revenge she needed in a wonderfully poetic and brutal way. “I just advocated and advocated and advocated for her to live up to her name. That was my mountain on that movie, and I got it, but it was hard, hard won.”

Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga is currently streaming on HBO Max.
