It stands to reason that a movie focused on two giant monsters fighting it out would have at least a touch of violence and peril in it, but how worried should you be about taking your little monsters to see Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire? While it isn’t a fool-proof system, the MPAA ratings can give a good idea of what level of violence you can expect in a movie. So what is the Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire rating and how appropriate is it for kids?
That depends entirely on how old your kids are. Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire is rated PG-13, which means that it is appropriate for children 13and older. It received that rating for “Creature Violence and Action” which is the MPAA’s way of saying that a bunch of kaiju are going to fight and it might scare young kids.
It is worth noting that a PG-13 rating does allow for more adult language to be used in a movie. Famously, films can have one F-Word in them and still be rated PG-13 – any more than that and they are usually bumped up to an R rating instead.
The best way to know if your young one should be watching Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire is to check out the other movies in the MonsterVerse franchise before taking them to see it. Starting with 2014’s Godzilla reboot, they have all had the same PG-13 rating. If they can handle the level of violence and destruction in the previous films, chances are they’ll be fine to see the new one when it comes out.
