Lorwyn Eclipsed release date delay: Wizards of the Coast warns of lateness amidst a major distro change with Diamond

Don't mulligan the Lorwyn Eclipsed decks just yet - the MTG Draft Night release date is delayed for some of us, but it will get here.

If you've played Magic: The Gathering for any amount of time, you can empathize when someone gets land-starved; as in, they haven't drawn enough lands to keep up with each turn's land drop. It seems like Wizards of the Coast is having that happen, metaphorically, speaking with their new set Lorwyn Eclipsed.

MTG Lorwyn Eclipsed is scheduled to be released January 23 across the world, after originally being pencilled in for a 2025 release. That overall January 23 release date still stands, but for some of us who frequent game shops you know they often release some (or all!) of a set early to stores in what's called Prerelease Week. That was to be the case with Lorwyn Eclipsed, with its Prerelease Week beginning January 16, but now a key part of that will have gotten a proverbial stun counter.

But only for those of us in the Americas.

WotC recently posted a rather meek announcement on its blog stating that the Lorwyn Eclipsed Draft Night sets will be delayed in reaching stores (and therefore fans) in North America and Latin America. Wizards prints MTG cards all over the world to fulfil that worldwide demand, but it seems somewhere between the printing and the delivery, there is an issue, called, very unspecifically, "a shipping issue."

"Due to a shipping issue, Lorwyn Eclipsed Draft Night will be delayed in North America and Latin America. The product will now arrive in two waves during the weeks of January 19 and January 26. No other products or regions are affected. We appreciate your patience and understanding as we prepare to venture into Lorwyn Eclipsed. Contact your local game store for more details, and we'll see you around the Multiverse."

While this could be simply whatever shipping companies, what some might forget is that in 2025 Wizards of the Coast terminated its partnership with one of its major distributors, Diamond Comics Distributors, in the wake of its bankruptcy and some financial issues predating that announcement. So, when did the Wizards deal end with Diamond (and its new owners?) December 31, 2025. Lorwyn Eclipsed would be one of the first products being shipped without the Diamond supply chain in the loop.

I must be careful to say that not all of Lorwyn Eclipsed is delayed; only the Lorwyn Eclipsed Draft Night boxes are delayed, and only in North America and Latin America. And its possible that the lack of Diamond isn't the reason for the delay. But of the many facets involved in getting MTG cards from Wizards to stores, that's the biggest change known about.

Either way, you can find me at my local game shop this weekend cracking open some packs of Lorwyn Eclipsed and trying to build a deck with enough lands that I won't be mana-starved like these Draft Night decks will be.
