David Tennant would love to do a musical!
(...if he could sing like Idina Menzel)
At a NYCC's spotlight panel in his honor, British actor David Tenant fielded a question on whether he would ever like to do a musical.
While the crowd went crazy at the idea, Tennant himself seemed initially lukewarm. “The thing about doing a musical is, the people who do it well are so good,” he said. “I saw Idina Menzel in Wicked. When you see someone like that who can really knock it out of the park, what’s the point? Unless you can reach those heights, I think probably you should leave it.”
“I would love to do a musical,” he went on. “I’d love to be able to. I’d love to be able to open my mouth and make one of those noises that make you go a bit funny, that make your bum go all tingly, those voices that come from deep beneath the earth and pour forth and just kind of tingle and make you feel things just by the timbre of your voice.”
When a member of the audience shouted out that his voice did just that for her, Tennant responded, “Listen, never say never... I just feel like there’s people who are probably better at it than me. So I should probably leave it to them.”
“Stay in your lane, DT,” he concluded, to shouts and sad cries from the audience. “Having said that, should the right thing come up, I’lllll beeee theeeeere,” he sang, to great applause.
“If I could sing like people who can really sing," he said later, "if I could sing like Idina Menzel, I would do nothing but musicals.”
