Zack Snyder might be making another Greek war epic in the vein of 300 after all

Who could resist what Snyder calls "an incredibly homoerotic, super violent, super sexual" historical epic?

Sure, we're all looking forward to the release of Rebel Moon , but a new Zack Snyder movie just provides the perfect time to discuss his unique career, and to look into some tentative future projects. For example, The Hollywood Reporter has learned the renowned filmmaker might be returning to Ancient Greece setting of his 2006 epic 300 sooner rather than later.

Much like Rebel Moon being born out of a scrapped Star Wars pitch, this new project was once envisioned as a follow-up to 300 - which, in case you forgot, already had a companion piece in 300: Rise of an Empire (2014).

The script, titled Blood and Ashes, was set up at Warner Bros. before he ended his DC run at the studio, and focused on the relationship between Alexander the Great and his second in command, Hephaestion. Well, much like the the Snyder Cut of Justice League, this project could unexpectedly return to the land of the living, as the Snyders have regained the rights to it.

Snyder confirmed this to THR recently: “We got the rights back so we can make if we want it… I don’t know what the marketplace is for an incredibly homoerotic, super violent, super sexual movie. But maybe it’s perfect.” Indeed, with adult audiences slowly turning their backs to much of the standard family-friendly fare that’s been dominating the cinematic landscape for over a decade now, plus his ongoing relationship with Netflix, maybe a spiritual successor of sorts to 300 is something viewers will respond well to.

If this is the first time you hear of such a project existing in draft form, we’ll let you know that it’s been described in the past (via THR) as “a gay love story that was also an ancient Greek war epic,” one that certain executives at Warner Bros. once championed. Of course, Warner Bros Discovery is a very different company, and one that’s making some questionable decisions, so something like this definitely has a better chance at getting made with a different studio in the equation.

For now, though, Snyder is focusing on Army of the Dead sequels and spinoffs for Netflix and finds himself deep into post-production on the second Rebel Moon movie, with a third one being written as we speak too. Whether another Snyder-captained Greek epic happens or not, he isn’t slowing down anytime soon.
