Star Wars: Starfighter

Plot details for Shawn Levy’s upcoming Star Wars movie have been pretty hard to come by for a few years now, but here is what we do know: it stars Ryan Gosling and is called Starfighter. Set five years after The Rise of Skywalker, this is the latest movie in the Star Wars timeline and the first in a potential movie to explore this new era in the franchise.

Untitled Star Wars movies
There are, however, more new films on the way. Revealed at the Star Wars Celebration Europe in 2023 were details of not one, but three upcoming movies that will expand the Star Wars Universe. The movies will be set in three distinct eras, with James Mangold directing a film about the very first Jedi, Dave Filoni directing a Mandalorian spinoff, and Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy directing a film about a new Jedi Order set after events in The Rise of Skywalker. Here's what we know about the officially announced upcoming Star Wars movies:
- Dawn of the Jedi (working title): Currently in development under the title “Dawn of the Jedi” — after its placement on the new Star Wars timeline unveiled at Star Wars Celebration Europe - will see director James Mangold and writer Beau Willimon, who'd previously worked on Andor, tell the story about the origins of the Force. What we know about the feature is that it's set 25,000 years before anything we’ve seen before, and that it will introduce the first Jedi, and investigate the origins of the Force itself. As Mangold said on stage at Star Wars Celebration Europe, “Where did the Force come from? When did we discover it? When did we know how to use it?” Those questions, and likely many more, will be addressed by this feature.
- Untitled Dave Filoni project: If Mangold’s movie is shrouded in mystery, the same can be said — to an even greater degree — for Dave Filoni’s film. What we know is that it is, in theory, a spin-off from the Disney+ shows that he’s involved in, and a major event in the New Republic era of the Star Wars timeline… and beyond that, little else. Filoni teased in comments to Collider that the story will connect events in the Ahsoka series to events in the Mandalorian, and perhaps more, saying, “Things aren’t that great when we begin The Force Awakens.” Given that Filoni became one of the executives running Lucasfilm in early 2026, it's unclear if this project is still in active development.
- Untitled Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy project: Set 15 years after Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, the movie from the Emmy-winning director will feature the Sequel Trilogy’s Rey in a lead role, with Daisy Ridley reprising the role. "I am so, so thrilled to be at the Celebration with all of you in London," Ridley told fans after being introduced at the Celebration, "I am very thrilled to be continuing this journey." Fans have known about the Obaid-Chinoy project since October 2022, when it was reported that the Ms. Marvel director would be helming a new Star Wars feature, written by Lost and Watchmen’s Damon Lindelof; Lindelof departed the project, and was replaced by Peaky Blinders creator Steven Knight. At least one screenplay exists, thanks to an aside in a 2024 interview with Ridley, so the real question is... how quickly will the movie get into production?
Additionally, Star Wars Episodes 10-12 were reported by the press as being in development in November 2024 with X-Men movie writer Simon Kinberg reportedly writing and producing all three. Then-Lucasfilm boss Kathleen Kennedy confirmed those reports in February 2025, saying, "That has gone exceptionally well, and he’s literally going to script as we speak. We’ll see something probably around June." Kinberg's trilogy, she teased, "is the next iteration, the new saga that moves us into the future."
When Kennedy left Lucasfilm in January 2026, she updated the status of the Kinberg trilogy: "He wrote something that we read in August, and it was very good, but not there. We’ve pretty much upended the story, and then spent a great deal of time on the treatment, which he finished literally about four weeks ago. And it’s a very detailed treatment, like 70 pages. And so he is expected to give us something in March [2026]."

Upcoming confirmed Star Wars shows
Star Wars: Visions Presents - The Ninth Jedi
Announced for a 2026 launch window during 2025's Star Wars Celebration: Japan, this animated special will continue the 'Ninth Jedi' thread of animated shorts from Production IG that have appeared in the first and second seasons of the Star Wars: Visions anthology series. No further details have been announced, although it is believed that this will be the first in an irregular series of 'Star Wars: Vision Presents' special episodes.
Platform: Disney+
Ahsoka Season 2

The first season of the Dave Filoni-helmed series featuring the fan-favorite character both served as an ending and a rebirth for Ahsoka: she was left in a new galaxy with no immediately obvious route back to her home, alongside not only her friend Sabine Wren, but also the dark Jedi Baylan Skill and his apprentice Shin Hati. She’d come to terms with her relationship with Anakin Skywalker, and seemed filled with something approaching peace with her history. Lucasfilm confirmed that a second season of the show is in the works, meaning that we’ll all get to see just what was going on with the filled-with-foreboding final scenes of that first season. What was Baylan up to?
Ahsoka Season 2 will premiere on Disney+ "early in 2027," according to a May 2026 announcement.
Platform: Disney+
Maul: Shadow Lord Season 2
The second season of the animated series focusing on the iconic villain from Episode 1 and The Clone Wars was actually announced ahead of the show's Season 1 premiere in April 2026. The second season was described as already being "in the works from Lucasfilm Animation," with Sam Witwer returning as the voice of Maul.
Maul: Shadow Lord Season 2 is anticipated to debut on Disney+ at some point in 2027, although both Disney and Lucasfilm have yet to specify a release window.

Star Wars movies & TV shows without recent status updates
In addition to the projects listed above, there’s a significant number of additional Star Wars stories in development without any dates attached. The following projects are all believed to be in some stage of active development at Lucasfilm currently:
Patty Jenkins's Rogue Squadron

Set during the time of the Galactic Rebellion, the Rogue Squadron movie was first announced all the way back in 2021, along with its director, Wonder Woman's own Patty Jenkins. Then, some years went by, with few to no updates, and even the creative team considered the project to be on the back burner.
Recently, however, Jenkins confirmed that the Rogue Squadron movie was back on, saying her and Star Wars decision makers would "finish the deal" they struck nearly three years ago. Still, when that deal wiill come to fruition has not been announced.
Lando

Lando Calrissian is undoubtedly one of the most charismatic scoundrels in the entire Star Wars universe, so it would make sense to create a show centered on the beloved former owner of the Millennium Falcon... and, perhaps, it makes just as much sense that what started as a TV series would end up as a movie.
Justin Simien, the brilliant mind behind Dear White People, was developing an event series for Disney+ featuring the character spinning out of his appearance in Solo: A Star Wars Story, but he's since been replaced by Donald and Stephen Glover, who have apparently transformed the project into a movie. No other details have been released and nothing has yet been officially announced by Lucasfilm.
Platform: Theatrical
Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic
In 2019, then-Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy told MTV News that the studio was "developing something" in the movie sphere to do with the Knights of the Old Republic video game. Soon afterwards, it was reported that Avatar screenwriter Laeta Kalogridis was working on the project which was the first in a potential trilogy of features. There has been no mention of the project since then, and Lucasfilm has never officially acknowledged that it was in development. Kalogridis has since created the Netflix series Altered Carbon, as well as written a screenplay for Gal Gadot's mooted Cleopatra movie.
Platform: Theatrical
Untitled Taika Waititi project

During the 2020 Disney Investor Day presentation, Kathleen Kennedy mentioned that a Star Wars film from Taika Waititi that was in development. Though practically all information about the project remains unknown, in a May 2022 article in Vanity Fair, Kennedy revealed that screenwriter Krysty Wilson-Cairns (Last Night in Soho, 1917) was assisting Waititi on the script. Midway through 2022, he admitted that he was “still trying to figure out what the story is." The current status of the project is unknown, but Waititi confirmed the project is still ruminating, telling Entertainment Tonight:
"At the moment, I'm still developing something with [Star Wars producers]. Like me, they have a lot of projects going on. I think they're gonna push it until I finish these other projects [...] I've got about four other scripts that I'm trying to finish. My thing is I want to take my time with that and get it right. I don't want to rush this movie."
This won’t be Waititi's first foray into Star Wars, as he directed Chapter 8: Redemption of The Mandalorian and voiced IG-11, the assassin droid.
Platform: Theatrical
The following projects are not believed to be in active development, but may not be officially cancelled, either:
The Mandalorian Season 4

Even before the third season of the show had debuted on Disney+, show writer and creator Jon Favreau told CinemaBlend in an interview in 2022 that he was already writing the fourth season of the Disney+ show. With the announcement that Favreau will direct the big screen The Mandalorian and Grogu, it's unclear whether or not a fourth season of the show - which was never officially announced by Lucasfilm - will actually happen.
Platform: Disney+
A Droid Story
The Star Wars franchise is also branching out into animation features beginning with A Droid Story, which will be developed by Lucasfilm Animation and Industrial Light & Magic and will premiere on Disney+. According to the official Star Wars Twitter account, the tale revolves around a new hero who sets out on a quest guided by legacy characters R2-D2 and C-3PO. No release date has been set, and Lucasfilm has notably not issued an official update on the project since 2021.
Platform: Disney+
Untitled Rian Johnson trilogy

A month before The Last Jedi hit theaters, it was announced that the movie’s writer/director Rian Johnson would be creating his own Star Wars trilogy, entirely separate from the Skywalker Saga and involving all-new characters from a different corner of the galaxy that has never been explored. Johnson himself would write and direct the first installment, and his frequent collaborator, Ram Bergman, would produce. As Johnson became busy with Knives Out sequels for Netflix and working on his Peacock series Poker Face, the project dropped further down his list of priorities, leading to a November 2025 update where it was described as being "effectively dead," although he isn't admitting defeat just yet: "A part of my brain will always be in Star Wars," he said. "It's so much a part of me and the way I think."

What is the next Star Wars series coming out?
At time of writing, the next Star Wars television project to debut is likely to be Star Wars: Visions Presents - The Ninth Jedi, the animated special spinning out of the anthology series Star Wars: Visions, which was announced for a 2026 release window. No specific date has been announced by Lucasfilm or Disney, however.
The next full season of a Star Wars show to premiere will be Ahsoka Season 2, which will arrive in early 2027, per Lucasfilm and Disney+.
Will there be a season 2 of Obi Wan Kenobi?
The six-episode Obi-Wan Kenobi series from 2022 was announced as a mini-series, but the reception from fans — and star Ewan McGregor’s eagerness to make more — have a lot of people wondering if it might be expanded into an ongoing series, or at least receive a sequel of some kind. Nothing has been officially announced by Lucasfilm, although all involved parties have expressed an interest in continuing with the series should Lucasfilm or Disney want to move forward.
What are the new Star Wars movies in order?
While we don’t have official release dates for any of the new Star Wars features beyond Star Wars: Starfighter, everything would simply be conjecture at this point although, based on public comments, Simon Kinberg's untitled Star Wars trilogy would appear to be closest to production status at time of writing.
In terms of the official Star Wars timeline, things are much clearer; the order of the new movies is:
- Dawn of the Jedi (working title)
- Untitled Dave Filoni project
- Star Wars: Starfighter
- Untitled Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy project
- Star Wars: Episodes 10-12 (working titles)
