A Yellowstone spinoffs guide: 1883, 1923, The Madison, 6666, and 1944

The Paramount television show Yellowstone has spawned a few spinoffs with a numerical theme

Kevin Costner loves to star in a Western, it seems. The actor played the lead in the Paramount hit series, Yellowstone, about a cattle rancher whose land borders a town, a Native American reservation, and Yellowstone National Park. The show has gone on to become one of the most popular shows in America. Though Yellowstone is ending (presumably), its world will continue to live on in a series of spinoffs spearheaded by Yellowstone co-creator, Taylor Sheridan.

If you've heard about the show, but haven't had the chance to check it out yet, here's your guide to both the past and present of the Yellowstone universe.

Yellowstone has five seasons on the Paramount Network. It follows the family of John Dutton, played by Kevin Costner, and the things that him and his family do in order to maintain control over their land. While the Dutton's ranch may be idyllic-looking, their world is anything but. It is riddled with murder, backstabbing, and all that sordid jazz.

1883

1883 is the first Yellowstone spinoff, telling the story of the Dutton family during, you guessed it, 1883. It originally began streaming on Paramount+ in late 2021 before wrapping up its tenth episode in February of 2022. While more episodes for 1883 were initially announced by Paramount, the plans were later scrapped. Characters from 1883 have appeared in episodes of Yellowstone's fourth season in flashback scenes.

1923

1923 is the second prequel series for Yellowstone, and is a sequel to 1883, streaming on Paramount+. The series will consist of two seasons comprised of eight episodes each, with the first season having premiered in 2022. It features Helen Mirren as Cara Dutton. Harrison Ford plays Jacob Dutton, the elder brother of 1883's James Dutton played by Tim McGraw (stay with me here). The Dutton family's rival is Banner Creighton, played by the excellent British actor Jerome Flynn who you may have seen in Game of Thrones, Black Mirror, and BBC's Ripper Street.

1944

The next prequel for Yellowstone is set in 1944, with one season ordered by Paramount. No other details about the show are available at this moment.

The Madison

The Madison is the only confirmed Yellowstone spinoff thus far to not have a name comprised of numbers. The show's name refers to the Madison River Valley in Montana, where the show is set. It is intended to be a sequel to Yellowstone and will star Michelle Pfeiffer. While previous Yellowstone stories have centered on the folks who call Montana home, The Madison is about a family from New York who move to the Madison River Valley as a way to deal with their grief. It is not currently known when The Madison will release.

6666

While I wish 6666 referred to the year that the next Yellowstone spinoff took place in, it refers to the Four Sixes ranch in West Texas. Unlike the ranch featured in Yellowstone, the Four Sixes ranch is an actual place comprised of 350,000 acres. Taylor Sheridan was among the group that bought the ranch for almost $200 million in 2022. Development is currently underway for the show, and no other information related to plot or release dates have been announced yet.

1883 Bass Reeves spinoff (no longer connected to the Yellowstone universe)

Lawmen: Bass Reeves - David Oyelowo

Originally, Paramount had plans for a Bass Reeves series spinning out of 1883 (so, a spinoff of a spinoff), led by series creator Taylor Sheridan. However, that series ended up being a standalone series called Lawmen: Bass Reeves, and isn't tied to the Yellowstone universe. It is streaming on Paramount+ and stars David Oyelowo. In case you need a refresher, Bass Reeves is a historical figure who had a long career in the US Marshals in the last quarter of the 19th century, so it makes sense that a series about someone like Bass Reeves could carry its own weight.
