Following Pixar's lead, Walt Disney Animation not only cancel Princess and the Frog series but abandons plans for Disney+ originals entirely
Following the success of Moana 2 and Inside Out 2, it is clear to Disney that there is more money at the box office than on streaming services.

More than Marvel. More than Star Wars. More than anything else in the massive umbrella of properties that fall under its corporate banner, Disney will always be known for animation. Some of the most iconic characters and animated movies have come from Walt Disney Animation, all of which can be found in the Disney+ library. However, that doesn’t mean the company will be making new series for the streaming service, as Walt Disney Animation is abandoning plans for new animated series on Disney+.
The news comes as Walt Disney Animation confirms that Tiana, an animated series in development that would have seen Anika Noni Rose reprise her role from The Princess and the Frog, has been canceled. In the same announcement, the company said that they were also canceling a previously unannounced feature-length animated film that had been expected to go straight to Disney+. This was followed by reports that Walt Disney Animation was following Pixar’s lead and not developing any original content for streaming in the future.
The move comes as a bit of a shock, as two of the biggest animation studios on the planet seemingly confirm that there isn’t any money to be had in developing original content for Disney+. After both Moana 2 and Inside Out 2 made $1 billion each in cinemas, it seems that Disney is following the money to the box office instead. The move also seems to confirm that original animated content doesn’t bring in new subscribers to Disney+, which makes it difficult to justify producing them.
