I still can't get Hulu's Shōgun out of my head, and a lot of it was due to how it looked. Turns out, Marvel Studios might have been thinking the same thing, as they have hired the person responsible for much of the visual style of the period piece to bring their Vision-centric spinoff to Disney+'s WandaVision to life.
Shōgun's director of photography Christopher Ross has signed on for Vision Quest, the tentative name of the Paul Bettany starring Disney+ series that's driving to a hopeful 2026 release. The news came from Ross' talent agency, Independent Talent Group, who updated his listing to note he's signed on for that.
Ross cut his teeth in superhero TV, having been a part of E4's Misfits series (which my colleague Graeme McMillan gushed about recently). Since then he shot Peacock's Day of the Jackal remake, and chipped in on Bong Joon-ho's upcoming Mickey 17.
In an interview about Shōgun, the cinematopgrapher says something about period dramas that personally gives me thrills when thinking about this kind of approach to Vision Quest.
“When creating any period drama it is really important to me that you bury the characters in the imagery so that it feels like they created the universe, rather than looking as if you created an aesthetic that sits on top of the imagery," Ross told British Cinematographer.
Vision Quest is working in hopes of a 2026 release date on Disney+.
