Our Flag Means Death’s Vico Ortiz shares their favorite comfort songs - and its Broadway musicals and a surprising Marvel song
In our latest Awe Talk conversation, actor Vico Ortiz sheds light on the tunes that make them feel at home

When times get tough, we all have our tunes that we lean back on. Peter Quill from Marvel Comics certainly does. The latest entry in our Awe Talk series from our Editor-in-Chief Chris Arrant gave us the opportunity to hear from Vico Ortiz about the music that brings them comfort. Chris spoke with Vico at GalaxyCon Columbus 2024 about what fuels them as a multi-hyphenate performer and artist.
“I love 'Elephant Love Medley' from Moulin Rouge, both the Broadway versions and the movie versions. I love singing,” said Ortiz. They added, “'Masquerade' from Phantom of the Opera. Granted, I don't know the lyrics but I just love humming to it. There's an intensity to it, and that scene leading to the reveal of the face... I know more of the music side than the lyrics side, but I just love it like bacon soup. And then I love singing 'Sunrise' from In the Heights. I love singing both high and low.”
There are tons of musicals that make for great singalongs, and Vico gives a great overview of some iconic shows. Later on in the interview, they sang a line from ‘The Ballad of Witches’ Road’ from Agatha All Along, showing that they’re willing to mix it up between the classics like Phantom of the Opera with new tunes like the song from Agatha All Along.
