Sometimes an actor and a showrunner disagree on a scene. This usually involves a spirited debate, but Danai Gurira isn’t like any other actress. The Walking Dead star, who plays Michonne on the zombie apocalypse drama, wasn’t looking forward to being covered with zombie guts. However, she had a plan on how to playfully turn the situation around on Walking Dead showrunner Scott Gimple.

“This was one of Danai’s first episodes,” Scott Gimple says during a Walking Dead spotlight panel at New York Comic Con 2022. “I had written in the script that she’s on the ground and this walker’s coming at her that’s particularly rotted and the walker’s stomach is really just a mess. Just a goulash of guts. And I said, ‘Michonne slashes it and down comes a gory jackpot.’”

“Danai was like, ‘I’m not doing that.’ And I was like, ‘No, you will. You have to.’ And the day came, and she did it, and she was covered with guts, and she leapt up, walked across the set, and gave me the biggest hug in the world.”
