Eric Kripke knows The Boys goes to some dark places, but that is because he believes that is where hope thrives.

Watching The Boys, it can be easy to see it as a cynical take on the nature of resistance against authoritarian regimes. The characters all go to some very dark places, and all of them have lost something along the way, but that doesn’t mean showrunner Eric Kripke doesn’t want fans to be depressed while watching. In fact, he wants fans to feel hopeful when they watch The Boys Season 5 finale next week.

During an interview with Empire Magazine, Eric Kripke talked about what he’d like people to feel when the credits roll on the final episode of The Boys. Through all the deaths, both human and animal, Kripke wants fans to feel hopeful at the end of The Boys. “You may be surprised to hear this, but I want people to feel hope [after watching the finale],” Kripke said. “That’s something we need right now. When people say the show is dark and nihilistic and cynical, that never resonates with me, personally. It tries to be a very realistic take on hope.”

To Eric Kripke, The Boys represents hope not as an unstoppable force but as a fragile thing. “Hope is not this big, huge, sweeping thing – it’s really fucking hard. It takes a million small moments of grace that everyone has to do. Hope is monotonous and boring and takes an incredible amount of effort, and you fail so much more often than you succeed. The most beautiful thing about humanity is the extent with which we get up every single time. To me, the message of the show was always that you’re gonna keep getting smacked, but the getting up is the thing.”

The Boys Season 5 finale airs May 20 on Prime Video and, if you ask Eric Kripke, it should become a source of hope for fans around the world.

They are brash, unforgiving, and a little rough around the edges... and they're the good guys! The heroes of Prime Video's The Boys, led by Karl Urban's Butcher, go up against the 'superheroes' that is the Seven, led by Anthony Starr's Homelander, leader of the Seven. With that show's five seasons plus spinoffs such as Gen V, Diabolical, and reportedly more, there's a lot to the Boys Franchise, and we're here to help... with:
