What’s the biggest unanswered question in Star Wars? How did Maz Kanata find Luke Skywalker’s original lightsaber? Why didn’t Vader sense that Leia was his daughter? Will Lucasfilm ever bring Mara Jade back?
These are all good questions, but the one I’ve spent years wondering about is the fate of Kino Loy. In Andor season one, Kino helps Cassian Andor lead a prison breakout on Narkina 5, only to discover that the prison is surrounded by water. Kino, who can’t swim, appears to remain behind while Cassian and the other prisoners jump to safety.
Kino was never seen again, leaving fans like me to ponder his fate. Andy Serkis, who played Kino, was recently asked what happened after Kino fell in the water, but the actor was quick to remind us that we never saw Kino leave the ledge.
“I don’t think he did fall,” Kino Loy actor Andy Serkis said during an appearance on the Happy Sad Confused podcast. “I think he went back in, and there’s a rather nice large drinks cabinet in central command that’s been left behind. I think he’s waiting for his moment.”
Lucasfilm anticipated questions like these and had specific instructions on how Serkis should answer them. “It was strange, because while we were promoting the first series, they had started the second. They purposely kind of asked me to reveal what happened to him with, I think, the prospect of coming back, and then nothing.”
Until someone decides to revisit his story - and it's Star Wars, so that's definitely a possibility at some point, in some medium - I suppose the fate of Kino Loy will always be left up to our imaginations. I can only hope he found a lifeboat somewhere and is living his best life away from the Empire.
