Paramount+ said no to a full-length Star Trek: Discovery finale, says series star

The streaming service turned down requests for the finale movie, as well as an extra episode to close out Star Trek: Discovery after its cancellation, said Sonequa Martin-Green

Star Trek: Discovery was the series that, in 2017, relaunched Star Trek as a television franchise after more than a decade, paving the way for shows such as Star Trek: Lower Decks, Star Trek: Picard, and Star Trek: Strange New Worlds. While it was a show that divided fandom, it made it to five seasons on Paramount+ — two more than the original Trek — which you might imagine would have earned the series some good favor at the streaming service.

Or maybe not.

Talking during an appearance at virtual convention Trek Talks 4 earlier this month, series lead Sonequa Martin-Green recalled that Paramount+ was not particularly open to giving the show extra time or space to wrap up ongoing storylines after the series was cancelled.

“I remember from the moment we found out that the show was going to be ending and we were we were in talks with Paramount+ about how we were going to wrap the show up. What [producers] wanted was an additional episode to really be able to touch everyone’s stories, to really be able to close this thing out. We were not able to be afforded that.” Martin-Green explained. “I think what Alex [Kurtzman, executive producer] and Michelle [Paradise, writer/producer], originally wanted was a full two-hour movie finale kind of thing, right? And it was like, 'no, we’re not going to be able to do that.' And it’s like, 'okay, well then what about an extra episode?' 'No, we’re not going to be able to do that.' 'Okay, what about like an extra like half of an episode or something like that?' What they ended up having was about 12 pages.”

The epilogue to the series was filmed in just three days — “I don’t know how we got anything done, but it was just… crying and delirium and, like, tears and laughter and delirium and tears, the whole three days,” she remembered — but Martin-Green is nonetheless happy for any opportunity to close out the series, she said.

“We’re grateful that they gave us this, because they did not have to,” she said of Paramount+. “This is not always the case with shows, so we did get to close up, and I am so grateful for that.”

The entirety of Star Trek: Discovery is available to stream now on Paramount+.
